Hey Boomers. I have been looking at Sharp GF-777 series radios for some time. I know there are allot of letter models...E,Z and so on.

I am going to Tokyo Japan at the end of June and will be hitting Turbo Sonic. I was thinking of asking them to look for some radios for me. This is one of them.

Can some one here tell me:

What years they were made?
What model really were considered the performers?
Are the Japanese versions (the ones with Japanese writing on them) any better then the US or Euro models?

Now to the more technical aspects of the system.
Below are some pictures of the control panel. Can you please tell me what some of these controls are.

What are the buttons called "APLD" Auto Program Locate Device
It appears to be tired in to the light meter?

Are the VU meters "Out Put Level" meters? and what does VU stand for?

What does the "SNRS" switch do?

In this picture with the speaker grill, it says "W" Double Cassette. What does the "W" stand for?
I have also seen some that say 4 Amplifiers. Do they all have 4 amps?
I see these radios bringing in BIG dollars. Are they good performers or just big radios with out allot of "get up and blast!"

What years they were made?
Approximately 1981 to 1985 (if I remember correctly)

What model really were considered the performers?
Definitely the GF-1000

Are the Japanese versions (the ones with Japanese writing on them) any better then the US or Euro models?
I would say not really - except for the GF-1000.

What are the buttons called "APLD" Auto Program Locate Device It appears to be tired in to the light meter?
APLD is the song search system when listening to cassettes. If you wanted to skip 3 songs you would push the APLD button until the third LED is lighted and press FF or REW while PLAY is engaged.

Are the VU meters "Out Put Level" meters? and what does VU stand for?
No they are not true output level meters. VU stands for Volume Unit.

What does the "SNRS" switch do?
Noise reduction

In this picture with the speaker grill, it says "W" Double Cassette. What does the "W" stand for?
Nothing really. The Japanese attached letters seemingly at random to electronics.

I have also seen some that say 4 Amplifiers. Do they all have 4 amps?
I think only the GF-777Z and the GF-1000 have four amplifiers but I could be wrong.

They are indeed good performers. However, don't expect to be impressed with treble response. That's the one area where these boxes are weak. Battery life is really good on radio and line-in.

Here's something that might help:

The gf767 is a stripped down powerhouse - it doesn't have echo or super woofer control - not a big deal to me considering in exchange you get some cool blue grilles!!!

If I had to choose a 767 or 777 it will be my 767's
