Hi Just wanted to check something.

New GF-777 and got a question.

I flip the power switch and red light goes out, but tape, radio etc still functions.

I would normally assume a defective switch but the off position says SLEEP as well. So wondering if the power button is just for battery use or something?

thanks

SLEEP is for falling asleep to a tape, it will turn off when it stops at the end.
So if you just want to listen to a tape, just press play. No need to turn it on first.

I checked a manual - it says the unit is always powered on while AC plugged in - have to pull the power to properly power down.

So power button mostly for battery, and the sleep function.

Power switch should absolutely power the unit off unless the play head is engaged on either deck
It doesnt - not on mine - After I posted I got access to the manual, it confirms if plugged in then the unit is always on. Seems power is for battery use.

I use my GF boxes plugged in 99.9 percent of the time and the power switch turns them all off every time. On battery or mains. GF-777 GF-919 GF-1000 GF-909.

I suspect your power switch is faulty
The way my manual reads is the way mine behaves. Manual says unit is not turned off. To turn off, you disconnect power.

In your case I suspect you never powered down while radio was on (and assuming you stop tapes before powering down) you might never have noticed the unit stays functional.

After power down if you press play on a tape, or switch to radio you`ll see it comes to life no matter what setting the power is at.

It seems a functioning power button is for battery users only....and it turns off the power light! lol.

On mine, with power switch in the off position the only way the power will turn back on is, if you press play on either deck (no matter where the function switch is) radio, tape or line input. This is how the sleep feature is engaged.

If the AC cord is plugged in there will always be power present at the transformer the power switch allows the power from the transformer to power up the electronics. Once you turn off the power switch there's no more power to the electronics but they're still power present at the transformer. All the sleep function does is power down the unit when the tape is at the end. But power is still present at the transformer as long as the cord is plugged into a AC outlet. The cassette play buttons also work as a power switch. But once the tape is at the end with the sleep function on the electronics power down even if power is still present at the transformer.
