I took a gamble on a real rough looking Rising on ebay. It showed up looking just as it did in the pictures. Like a piece of  . It didn't power up and was covered in rust and dirt.

I did the whole take it all apart and clean thing. Nothing too exciting... I soaked the metal bars in 'krud kutter the must for rust' and it removed ALL OF THE RUST! I was pretty excited about that. Under all of the dirt there were tons of white specs that looked like it was downwind of a construction site. They were a pain to get off. I had to trace a couple problems with the power to get em straightened out.

It was all worth it though! Because now I have this really unique Rising with cool emerald accents! Everything is working now and I only need to replace a slipping belt and an antenna. The dial lamp works great, but I bought white LEDs to do the mod. I will be getting around to that shortly. Enjoy!

Very nice job reptoid, good score and good work. It's like a different box when you compare before and after.

Great cleanup job. I was looking at that one also but the pictures looked very rough. Nice looking boomer now.

After the cleanup, the box is worth way more than the cash you spent for it... :agree: :agree: i will bet if you put it back on the bay you will get a good 300 or 400 for it :w00t: :w00t:   nice find enjoy it....

Geezum crow! Amazing effort Reptoid. I really like that colourway too, supercool!

On the off chance, any chance of me buying that working dial lamp off you, please?
I need one for mine and am not a fan of the led backlit look, would be awesome to get another
genuine one!

Hey Rick. Why would you want to buy a "used" lamp? I understand not wanting the LED look -- to each, his own. Although LED's is the logical thing to upgrade to when originals burn out, new incandescent replacements shouldn't be too hard to find right?

They're very hard to find down here. The go-to replacement bulb used to be car courtesy lights or whatever the lights are in the roofs of cars that light up when the doors are open. Now all they're replaced with LED's in the same fitting.

I've had no luck at all finding incandescent lamps that work for dial lamps, if you've got any suggestions I'd be most grateful!

I don't mind importing them either.

Next time you have one opened up, do a quick test with a voltmeter to see what voltage those lamps are receiving. I'll see if I can come up with something. Also a pic of the dial lamp will help. My feelings is that the grain of wheat bulb is what you are looking for. Google it and you should be able to find someone to sell you some. Hobby shops, especially those that sell model railroad stuff stock tons of them. A higher voltage bulb will work in a lower voltage application but a little dimmer.

THANK YOU, Norm!! That 'grain of wheat' search term is exactly whay I needed!

They're all over ebay for pittance. Will be able to perform all manner of dial lamp replacements now!

Thanks again!

There is also a grain of rice bulb too, but I believe that one's a bit smaller and not the typical boombox size.

See, I told ya that it doesn't make sense to install old lamps. Not quite as bad as recycling old oil filters but you get the picture..

Well, when one doesn't know, one toils in obscurity until the correct path is shown.

A burned out dial light had me resorting to pawing through my toy collection for anything with a light up feature that
predated the use of LEDs.

But now, Norm, you've shown me the path of true light!
