Found this at a Garage sale today on my way home.
Actually wasn't for sale and was dropped outside the kitchen door, covered in dust with a screwdriver for an antenna. :-O
I had to resuce it! Got an antenna for $10 too!!! (For my Landy :-P )
Until I get my AIWA J88 this 3 speaker will have to do. Sounds good (loud) but now low down b@lls!

Yeah, you are right there. Good and loud but not much low end b@lls!
Will give it a clean up and fish out the on/off switch which has dissapeared into the guts of the box.

Me too. Somebody can give a love to this box. Ive made some 3Ds presents to a friends whit work shops, auto services and so and they are really happy whit them  . Its cool to see old warriors booming in industrial areas. IMO 3Ds are made for that.

Yeah,
I have a big shed and my old sharp I use in there has no line in.
I think the hitachi will be taking it's place!

yeh most of the 3Ds suffered from the speakers just being bunged in the box without any acoustic loading (bass reflex, etc.). The result? loud, thumpy bass, but little ability to reproduce the drop-bass sounds that became popular in rap, pop, etc. from the later 80s onwards. Then stuff like JVCs Hyper-bass came along, which could reproduce those sounds - Hitachi's version being the ASW (acoustic super woofer) as seen on boomers like the 3D90 & 3D82.

To be fair, when these 3Ds were new, not much music had the low/drop bass in it. Also, Hitachi appeared hell-bent on making their 3D boomers as loud as possible for the money, which is something they did rather well. When I got my 3D7 in '87, the manual said: "Compare the bass output with a similarly priced machine from a competitor" (or similar). When compared to most mid-80s mid-size boomers, it's extra woofer & BTL amp. made one hell of a difference back then.
I always have happy 80s memories of my 3D7 being unbeaten in sound-offs for quite a while (we couldn't afford GF777s or M90s).

Yup, you really need a boombox screwdriver for the 3Ds...

Hey, try asking for a "boombox screwdriver" at the hardware store & see if they understand what you mean... :-)

HAHAHA!

The 5 year olds behind the counter at the joint I went to today on my way home wouldn't even know what a screwdriver was let alone a BBX! :hmmm:
BOOM BOX??? Isn't that a KFC meal man?? Now go away while I talk about my @#$%ing my GF as that's more important than actually doing the job I get paid to do! :smooch:
