Fun with trim

I decided to try and bend some tape holder trim I had cut for my C100F resto but never used because the metal was too thick. Howie needed one and thought I'd see if it might still work, just not with the fine bends like the original. Only the bottom could get a bend, so I played around with some scrap and got a decent radius set in on the brake.

After taking it out though, it had a bit of an arc to it, so will need a good glue to keep straight.

It has a brushed look, but it's a third thicker than the original aluminum, and tougher (stainless)

I thought I'd try to apply some dry transfer lettering I had made, so I taped it down and started pressing.

Looks good so far! I can tell it's separating from the paper when it gets lighter.

Unfortunately, dry transfer gets harder to stick over time as the material dries out. I started pressing super hard but that just starts to smoosh it out, so I had to clean it off.

Ah man, I didn't realize there is a shelf life for dry transfers. Still is the way to go for most boombox text. Nice looking trim dude.

Magician at work! Beautiful job!

It is really an art to work on metal. Every little mistake will show enhanced when light reflects at a glancing angle.

I had to cut 10 pieces from a brushed Al sheet to bend and make one good top trim of M90 above the dial glass.. That 2mm wide, 45 degree double bend at the corner was not easy without a professional tool.

Even the cut ends must be smoothed. I used the smooth side of the screw driver to level the sharp edges.

Thanks guys! Yeah Joe those dry transfers will always work supposedly, but work best within the first couple of weeks. It might be too dry now for that shiny of a surface, as well as the fragile text.

Howie if you want I can send you the other copy I have and let you give it a shot :-)
