practice tonight.
band mate
yeah man i was out at value village today and i saw this weird german branded boombox.
it was called telefunken and it had some kind of studio on it.

me
come on man your joking right.

him
no man i was going to just grab it for you but i dont know if it was any good. it was pretty heavy and i was taking the bus.

me

how much was it.

him
9.99

me
are you a fn idiot.
him
what do you mean
me
dont worry about it man but do me a favour next time you feel like lighting a couple of hundred bucks on fire just let me know
i will be happy to save it for you.

him
you mean that thing was worth a couple hundred bucks.
me
yeah thats assuming it was beating to crap with nothing working on it.
him.
woah i will go back tomorrow and grab it for you.
me
yeah good luck with that.
i mean i wasnt really pissed with him but seeing as how he knows i collect these things i thought his brain would have allowed him to at least call me and let me know what is up when he comes across this stuff.
friends dont know and
i most likely would have been a little bit more humorous about the deal except the freaking singer
told us they were moving to montreal tonight in august.
great you float a new project and put a few thousand hours into it and one of the main members jets out.
i understand people gotta live there lives but the news would have been easier to take with a telefunken to ease my pain.

It really is amazing how isolated our hobby is from the general public.Understandably It's kind of rough knowing what you missed out on.However,I've come to the point in life where there's nothing I absolutely have to have. For me life is too short to worry about any water at all that has flowed under the bridge.

Are you angry about not having that box in your possession? Some people lose it all in a house fire. When people barely escape such incidents with their lives, they are praying and thanking God despite what they might have lost. This really puts materialism into perspective.

Don't let it ruin your relationship with your friend either.I'm sure he would have done whatever was necessary if he really knew you had wanted it.As a band your doing for others by entertaining and,in your case, hopefully still creating content that will live on long after your gone. That's as well as your friendship is much more valuable on a personal level than collecting.

If your upset about the possibility of having turned the box for a profit, don't be.It's in the past now. Also, consider the things in life we regularly waste money on.This includes subscription services, eating out, going to movies, cable tv,etc.Though you end up with nothing to show for such things,we spend thousands of dollars over time yet we don't fret over this "lost" money.Just think of the audio equipment that money could have bought. What this really emphasizes is the fact that most people feel our experiences in life with others is,at the very least, equally as valuable as tangible goods.

I'm not saying your not able to let it go,but I for one am very sensitive to peoples feelings on things particularly when it involves a sense of regret or loss..Look to the future.Live,love,explore,experience,create.Don't be fixated the past. :-)

Don't you just hate it when that happens, Bill? I know I've experienced similar conversations, however they never included the words "Telefunken" and "Studio". Jovie's right - you just have to go on and not dwell on it. Who knows. Fate might actually be kind enough to keep it there until you or your friend go back. :-)

Yeh you know it's wierd,
You don't even see boom-boxes sometimes unless it's something in YOUR life that you collect or appreciate.
There was this poster for a band that was all over my town.
It was 2 naked women. They were covering their nakedness with electronics.
One had some synthesizer device. I didn't think anything of it.
3 years later my friend has the poster on his wall, I'm looking at it and I notice what I didn't notice 3 years ago before I started collecting.
The other girl is covering herself with Boom-boxes.

But yeh, bummer bout the 'Funkin

True vintage boomboxes have been lost to most. It seems there is only a small following that understand, admire and even collect these old school music machines. I agree that you can't dwell on it but damn I'm sure it still stings for at least a few minutes. :'-(

I say jump in your car, go find your friend and have him tell you exactly where he saw that box.

Video the whole thing and post it on youtube and here, whether you find it or not...

Call it the "QUEST FOR THE HOLY GRAIL"

:-D

the only problem with that if everyone knew about the boombox collecting thing they will jack up the price so let say something was going to cost $ 9.00 now its $ 120.00

for jovie
nope not angry. allthough i do find it confusing how some peoples minds work.
i mean if tables were reversed and they have been i without a doubt would grab something i know that a friend of mine is into.

i must confess tho i did think it was pretty silly of him. i mean after all he has seen my collection and also has seen me show up with my boombox t shirt to practice several hundred times now.
for one of the smartest people i know i do think his intelligence button needs a touch of deoxit this time.

as for heading back there its gone. had to check it out this morning just had too.
im not to unhappy about tho.
things happen for a reason i mean he could have said nothing about it at all.
i checked out the watches this morning at the value village seeing as all the electronics were pilfered.
so there was this old sieko there it was a womans watch. i looked at the back of it and it had this weird gs gold badge on it.
hi beat automatic 23 jewels. the crystal on the front of it was all faceted and well it looked really cool.the band was shot and it was dirty for sure. watches are something i kind of keep a eye out for but i dont actively look for.
so i jetted off out of the value village no telefunken but a nice twelve dollar ninety nine cent wrist watch.
i wound the watch up and pressed it to my ear and it of course had sprung to life.
wow this thing ticks in a very strange fashion.
so i figured i would surprise the girl today and went off to the mall to get a new strap for it.
theres a place in there is a jewelers there so i jetted in.
i asked the woman at the counter if i could get a strap for this old watch i just got.
sure thing she said just go ask that guy over there.
so i walked over to see the old man behind the counter with the monocle up to his eye who was busy doing some crazy eleborate thing with tiny little pieces of shiny bits out of gold diamond encrusted monster.
i started to wonder if it is going to even be something he is going to work on i mean its just a old seiko watch.
can i help you he asked looking up from his current project with the monocle still implanted in his eye.
yep i got this old seiko watch i would like to get a band for . i dont want to spend to much money but do you think you could do it now.
so he gets up and walks over the counter i am at.
lets see this watch so i take it out of the value village bag plunking it down it in his hand.
i could see for sure it perked his interest.
hmmm he muttered. holding it up to his ear looking closely at it.
i have not seen one of these for a very long time you know that he says to me.
really this is a fine watch do you know that he said.
i thought it was just a old seiko.
no no no he says this is a grand seiko the best watches they ever made and its a pre quartz hibeat movement so its especially rare even this saphire cut crystal is very unusual.
how much did you pay for this watch he asked me as he did see me take it out of the value village bag.
so i told him i just got from value village for 12.99.
the funny corned beef smelling old watch maker looks at me and laughs
come on man
12 dollars and ninety nine cents.

yeah why is that good.

then the whole reminder of things happening for a reason kicked into place.
young man he said to me (i love it when old people still call me young man i am going to be 43 in two weeks)
to buy a watch similar in quality of this watch today will cost you hmmm

at least six thousand dollars. everything is quartz now junk in my eyes he says to me.

t i said come on
no i am serious even as this watch sits if you want to sell it as is right now you should be able to get a least a thousand dollars for it unserviced.

are you serious.
so by this time several people working there had come over to see my old junk watch concillation prize.
one of the chinese persons working there asked to touch me so i could give them luck.
it was all very strange.
so i got the band replaced i put a cheap 20 dollar strap on it and the old guy cleaned it up while i went to grab a donair from the mall food court while he did the work.
everything happens for a reason good or bad things are always in a state of flux and what is valuable in monetary terms is all a matter of personal desires and beliefs.
i would have never thought that watch was very valuable but for sure it was. the previous owner for sure didnt otherwise they would not have tossed it to value village.
so i was never pissed or angry with my band mate i still think he is a bit of a dullard for not cluing in but, if he had i would never have grabbed that watch.
a broke assed bum like me would never ever be able to give my girl something like that unless i took up crime as a hobby.
i mean taking a vow of poverty to pursue music and art full time is rough at times, but honestly in many ways i feel i am the luckiest guy around.
i have a killer synth collection home stereos my rich buddies wonder how they could sound better than there fancy new systems.
when i worked in managment i made good money
i was unhappy
i hated getting up i
the money was great but all we used to do was try to spend our way to happiness.
i bought things that had no value as a clerk would tell me it was the best thing in the world.

would i trade places with that life style for what i have now.
lately the thought has crossed my mind to bail on music and art.
i think that it would be foolish to do that at this point in time. i mean i am pretty lucky
being reminded that sometimes something that appears to be a crappolo deal can actually be a blessing is important.
there for sure is other things going on around us that place us in situations to teach us lessons.

sorry for the wandering post guys. i guess with the whole deal with adam i have been feeling a bit reflective on life in general.
i hope some of you enjoyed this long winding sometimes winding :-D tale

Great story, Bill!! The Grand Seikos were manufactured between 1960 and 1963. The Grand Seiko 57s were manufactured between 1963 and 1966. You definitely have a classic!

Hahah, awesome stories Bill, theres your blaster-karma right there! It can manifest in many ways...

My least favourite lines from friends are "You collect them? I just threw 'X amount' out last week" and "I saw one, but I didn't think it's what you were after."

I've collected many and varied things in my time, but in all my hobbies I've never been part of one so incredibly fragmented as ghettoblaster collecting. Values are entirely dependent on the location of where it's been spending the last few years, yet they are recognised as a major cultural icon of a bygone era. The inconsistencies are the only consistencies I've found. Maybe it's because we're in that odd bit of collecting-limbo still, and in another five or ten years consistent values and recognition will become more prevalent. This is one of the reasons I reallly love our hobby as it's still possible, and even likely, to find one of the big grails for pittance in a charity shop or at the dump. I guess we should enjoy these times as they won't last forever and the stories we all have of finding grails in the wild will become the stuff of legend.

Not that they aren't already for most of us!

Hahah, sorry for rambling. Great thread though Bill, rock on brother.

Rock On.
