Hi all
I just picked up this old beast really cheap just because it looked so awesome and took me back to my days as a wanna-be breakdancer kid in the eighties
I'm thinking it might be good for an 80's themed costume party that I'm going to next weekend
Although it would mainly be a prop and just for looks, I'd like to be able to play a tape so I could spontaneously bust out some moves for the ladies (hopefully there will be some ladies there) :)

The radio and lights all work well but, the cassette decks do not function very well...one deck has a weak 'spindle' and the other spins really fast

I wonder if anyone can advise me on whether this unit is very serviceable or if anybody has worked on one?
I'm pretty good with electronics having been a arcade machine serviceman many years ago but, I tried to fix an old Technics stereo tape deck once and that didn't turn out too well

I have until Oct 25 so if it's a big job that entails disassembly into hundreds of parts then I might just forget it

Thanks

Very nice unit. These units are very easy to work on. Decks will be a simple restoration for someone with some experience.

I can confirm ladies like this boombox. It's a big hit at parties and on the street they get an instant smile when they see it. The slow deck needs new belts. The fast deck probably needs the variable resistor for tape speed replaced due to broken carbon track. Easy box to work on.

Did you guys know there are two versions of this box? Except the clock and alarm... The earlier version has three AM Beat Cut buttons on the front panel. The newer version has these push buttons relabelled to Normal, Metal and CrO2... The earlier Beat Cut version is rather rare.

Thank you gents
I may open it up and take a peek then

You'll also notice mine does not have the little dial by the mic input at the lower left. There is a circular molding but, it has not been cut-out for a dial to have ever been fitted
Mine is also AM-FM only and not short-wave

Made a few small changes

I've replaced the two broken aerials, changed some of the red speaker LED's to green and I fitted a dummy dial next to the 'Mixing Mic' socket

Next thing I'll look at is one of the red LED's in the centre display has died since I started tinkering with it and I need to clean all the corrosion off the battery terminals (or just replace them)
I must have left the clock display disconnected when I buttoned it up

I'm using the AUX input so the tape decks will be the last thing I fix

I'm loving the green LED's. Any particular brand you used? I would also add at least 2 yellows in mine too. I have the exact same issue with my decks. One runs great and the other is fast as well. When you find out please let me know. Thanks.

Nice! Look at this guy, not even a week and he's upgrading his box, with what will surely be his new addiction. Congrats!!! Lookin' good!!!
