This Fisher 490 came to me with a totally dead deck. No power, no motor run. Pulled the back off, and like a deer in the headlights there were wires- everywhere

Not to be deterred, continued on to test the motor using an external power supply..

Motor checked out - but was loose -now for the unplugging - the tiny limit switches looked delicate -

Undid the circuit board first, removed all plugs , wire ties, removed the rear housing and accessed the belts- stretched out , 1 off ..

took a parts unit and replaced one of the tiny rubber spacers that secure the motor mount -

6.jpg

Motor and circuit board reinstalled after new belts and cleaning limit switches, plugs were fairly easy but there were several stray wires-marked them out and reinstalled plugs and wires-

Plugged in main unit to power supply, leaving middle of chassis out to test the deck and...

One happy, 100% Fisher PH-490 :-D

Thanks TMR , The second row of LED's came to life after cleaning all switches using switch and contact cleaner. I think it`s called deoxit in the States .. :-)

Very cool  told ya it easy ;-)

Hi badboybill , it was fairly easy but you didn`t mention the entire face removed from the chassis! :-O :-)

Biggest things were being careful not to bend the tiny limit switches and not to lose track of which wire plugged into where :-D

The deck operation - when pressing buttons to engage, it responds in a very quiet and solid manner - you feel confident once you have pressed the button it has locked into place and engaged - it doesn`t react like a boombox at all, more like a pro home cassette deck- Fisher did a great job on this unit !

Fisher made some excellent quality decks for sure. Even my little PH-463 has a terrific cassette deck mechanism that sounds close to what you are describing for the 490!
