To start things off...

Thank you again to all who were involved in helping me get this rare beauty. Anyone who has seen my avatar when I got it or who has kept up with my search from when I was on at s2g knows. I had wanted a CP-7 what seems like forever. I had been chasing a black on for 26 years. Very, very few came up on the 'Bay and they were scrappers at best.

Here is a brochure scan.

While living in Montgomery, Alabama during the week (because of work) a few years ago I came across a silver one one the 'Bay and outbid a certain individual from Houston to get it. :-D And it was located in Mississippi! Go figure!

Then, while traveling back from the 2009 Sunshine Mix, lo and behold, a black one appeared. And the guys did their best to contact me but it was too late...It went to Houston. :'-(

But, I am like Job, and have plenty of patience. I knew my day would come if I just remained faithful. And that day did come! I won't explain it here...

I'll let you read the original thread...

http://www.boomboxery.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3387&hilit=Black+CP7

And how could you beat a site like this with members like this!?!?!? You can't. :nonono:

Special big ups to MB84 and Sinister for bigtime coordination efforts! ;-)

Now my original intention was to not open it until the Sunshine Mix 2010...BUT...as I moved the box, something ratled in the box which made me nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs! :-O

So reluctantly...(really, my wife was even worried)...I opened it up and...whew! All was well! It was just the power cord. :-D

While I was at it I also got a new in box Sansui FX-W51R from my wife! She had always wanted to get me the Black CP-7 but the guys beat her to it. She said it was a good thing though because getting on the 'Bay at that time was not an option with hungry kids in the house waiting on dinner! My wife is the greatest!

And so the Sunshine Mix for 2010 rolls around. And though Ira's Toshiba was special...it still didn't have original untouched papers! Here is the video...(follow link...could not get it to embed code)...

After unveiling it and sharing the joy, I have finally got a chance to take some pictures that I am happy with using my meager photo skills. (And as always, I come through slowly but surely!) Following those will be my new avatar I made using GIMP2.

Here, finally are the pictures!

Breathtakingly beautiful.

You're a lucky man to own such a pristine example. Now if I just keep playing the numbers every week, maybe I'll get lucky too.

Beautiful Grail.

It's indescribable the feeling when we are looking for something for so long and we find (even in his case, which lasted almost a lifetime and when found, came complete).

I also hope to find my Helix HX-4630 a day (aka Jumbo CSC1000 CCE in Brazil).

This has been one of the best success stories on this site. How absolutely amazing that you and that particular radio would find each other in this world. A "new in box" with all the paper work to go with it.

Congrats man and thanks for all the great pictures. I have to say, it does look better in Black then Silver.

Cost.

:agree: They probably didn't sell well 'cause they cost a kidney. :-D

You are absolutely right about the kidney. :-O When these were first released thy went for ridiculous money in 1983 at $600 bucks. (At the post exchange they went for about $450 when first released.) Adjusted for inflation this thing would have cost $1275.56. :jawdrop: :jawdrop: :jawdrop:

By 1985 though, they were going for around $300-350. (The CP-5 was going for around $250-300.) Still a lot of dinero but prices were plummeting due to the proliferation of plasticky cheapo units which began to undercut the high end boombox market and the walkman putting a serious dent in it.

The last big hurrahs were the CP-77W and 99W...and then the fade to black for serious Sansui portables. Along with Denon, Kenwood, Marantz, Aiwa, Pioneer, Akai, Techinics (Matshusita's High End Audio Line) and other serious stereo brands. (Panasonic, Matshusita's mass consumer end, rode out the storm with their upper level XBS/DT/CT series and JVC, another Matshusita Subsidiary, with their PC-V Hyper-Bass series respectively, but build quality was nowhere in the galaxy of what it once was.)

However, it's nice to be featured in "Playboy".

Kinda easy to forget sometimes that Playboy has - ahem - reading material. :-D

With prices that high, I assume potential buyers probably said, "F*ck that! I'll buy a regular stereo system for that price!"

Yeah, when you put it in todays terms, that was MAJOR scratch back then. :-/

Thing is, even the rack systems that were starting to show (by these same companies) were an arm and a leg, plus the kidney and spleen. At least twice as much. So from a price point for higher end audio manufacturers, it made sense.

Remember these came out during the 80's "Wall Street" junk bond and rich brat era. So these figured to sell reasonably well to a niche market of well heeled individuals who wanted that "executive system". And that's exactly what they are called today with no handle or battery capability.

1983 to 1985 was a true turning point for electronics as we saw the downward spiral which led us to where we are today. :-/
