so i have spent time today with these two fine boomboxes listening to them side by side.
my overall observation of the two is that they both were made pretty much as good as both respective company could make a boombox back in the day.
the pc550 really has a lot of power behind it i am thinking the big heavy transformer in it much helps it to have a very warm and detailed sound.
the tape player on it has dolby b and c and the cool flourescent display is just one of the coolest features on any boombox ever produced.
the fh7 tho is no slouch in terms of hitech looks. squared off apm speakers cool backlit digital tuner and led capped eq sliders.
both these units have detachable handles and panels that bolt onto the sides of the unit to hold the handles and speakers in place.
so listening to the radio i can say the tuner on the pc550 seems a little nicer in terms of sound. it does appear tho the sony gets better reception and is quite capable as a shortwave receiver i dont really know if this sony boom box uses dual conversion but i am suspecting it does.
the eq on the pc550 seems to do more in terms of attenuation or boosting of a particular band.
the sony works too but not so much boost .
flat the sony seems to have a nicer sound but with the eq tweaked i think the pc550 sounds really amazing.
i think tho the pc550 has more distortion in its sound than the fh7 but the way it distorts is kind of fantastic.
stereo separation seems to be nicer on the pc550 as well.
you can turn this box up very very loud and it will deliver clean sound with decent bass its hard to make this box honk on the lower end of the spectrum but it will at extremely high volumes.
the same goes for the fh7. i think the fh7 edges the pc550 in terms of bass .
i think the fh7 also has a cleaner sound.
does this mean i think its sounds better than the pc550.
i am not so sure about that i mean in fact i think it would be hard to pick between the two.
they both have there own character and both of them are really iconic in terms of stylish three piece exotic boomboxes.
both of them wiegh about the same.
both have mdf cabs for the speakers.
both have excellent tape decks. the sony seems to have better sliders switches and build quality overall.
this cannot be said for the later fh sonys i have.
while the big fh215rs are louder than both these boxes by quite a bit they are not put together as well.
theres a lot of metal on the pc550.
its a really nice looking box as most of you know.
so is the sony fh7.
i think everyone needs one of each of these in there collection.
even if you cant find the rechargeable battery pack for your fh7 its a really great sounding boombox and i think the mk3 is the best of the series of the fh7.
apm speakers and they are threeway speakers.
they both are winners in my book.
