It's more rare and will probably be worth a hell of alot more years later just as the gold conion
I'm not so sure about that whole worth a hell of a lot more stuff - after all, it's still a Lasonic and not the better quality of the '80s versions. Plus, with today's "collector" mentality, I imagine there will be plenty of these still sealed years from now.

I would say NIB. would make it more enticing :hmmm: plus you say it's only lasonic but used lasonics from 80's are bringing in $$$. A brand new trc931 in box just sold for like $500 plus shipping :-D

I was comparing today's Lasonic quality to the older versions - "not the better quality of the '80s versions". The ones from the '80s will always bring more money (at least I think so) because the quality is better.

Its has its appeal I guess, I would add one to the collection for maybe 50% of that price

Putting build quality aside, I think perhaps (assuming what the auction says is true) that the old 931's just may be equal in rarity to this new one, only because it says there were only 300 made.

I know that the quality is low but since lasonic is really one of the only manufacturer's of boomboxes besides innovative technology and maybe couple others it should make it a nice collectors piece 20 years down the road :-D this is just my opinion Bobby and I could very well be wrong :hmmm:

:agree: with FD here, I think the collectabilty of the i931 will resemble more along the lines of the second generation 931 with it's rounded profile and weaker sound. These second generation 931's never sell anywhere near the much better and more desirable first generation models.

I'm only basing my opinion on what I've seen in the last 15 years or so - better known as "Life After eBay."

For example, back when Star Wars toys first came out, people were buying the toys to actually play with them. Then a new website called eBay came along years later and everybody suddenly became a collector with the mentality of "Oh, man! The vintage Star Wars figures are selling for lots of money. I'm going to buy all these new figures and never open them. Then I can sell them for a fortune down the road."

Well, I admit that I thought the same way, but fortunately I stopped buying SW figures in 2002 (waste of money). Nowadays, you can barely give the newer (1995 to present) figures away. There are so many "collectors" now that there is a glut of mint-in-package stuff. And that goes for more than just Star Wars toys.

Anyway, that's where I'm coming from. ;-)

It all goes back to what many have said before - don't buy boomboxes in the hopes of funding your kid's college education. Buy them for enjoyment of the hobby. If they appreciate in value, that is fantastic. If they depreciate, well, at least you still have a kick-ass boombox! :-D

I still agree with you bobby, on all points.
Collectors have exploded since eBay and manufacturers are loving it even packaging items as special edition or collectible to fire us collectors up.

Oh and I agree with this analogy but we are talking about the stars and stripes bbx which are only a certain number made ( maybe 300) and that is why I believe the value will rise!! :-)

That would be awesome if it did.  I think former member Gordie had five or six of these at some point. I wonder how many Conions he has now?? :hmmm:

Not many of these exist, however it is a regular i931 with different decals. Maybe a completest would like to have this for his/her collection, but it seems like the majority of future collectors would be happy with the standard model to represent the i931. I do however believe that the TRC models will continue to be more desirable to collectors. I love to use my i931 for the beach and as a fun no worries box. But I would say getting really serious about collecting the i931 line is very similar to collecting reproduction old money from museum gift shops. Maybe this school of thought is what will actually make the i931's collectible in the future. Only the future will tell, but currently I can think of some better radios to spend $500 on.

This was the first genuine variant of the i931, yeah? Before they started changing decals on them willy nilly.

I always thought it looked very crapulent. The 'Stars and Straps' brand was popular for about a week when the old drummer from Blink182 had that rubbish reality show. I don't think it's going to turn into an actually famous brand (beyond it's name) outside of blink182 fans and punk rock kiddies who do all their shopping at Hot Topic. Who knows in the future, there may be a collectors market just for i931s..but I don't think they'll be thousands of people clamouring for this one in a hurry.

Rock On.
