Has anyone ever put a new face on a JVC M70? Is it very difficult?

I mean new front casing.

Since the frame mounts to the front cabinet and the tape door must allign with the mechanism as well as the tuner window needing to allign this is a monumental and highly custom job. I really don't think you could do this without a extensive knowledge and skills with plastics not to mention the huge block of time needed.

I think he meant a "newer", better looking front from another M70. Maybe?

If that's the case, it wouldn't be a problem at all if you are comfortable with disassembling the M70. I don't have one, so I'm not familiar with how much stuff is attached to the inside of the front casing. It shouldn't be too bad though.

Yes i mean replacing a scratched face with a clean one. Also, I have had electronic instruments custom painted in the past and I thought that would be a cool idea for an M70.

My bad, I jumped over that one. :dunce:
Yes a face transplant in that regards is fairly easy on the M70, there are only 8 screws holding the frame to the front cabinet and a few wires.

you can do that to any box if its the same box, i have done swaps tons of times ,, you can use a good working box and have a non working box and swap its not that bad to do and you end up with a parts box in the process

thats what I was thinking. People have been offering me boxes that are functioning perfectly and are almost mint but maybe have a scratch on the front. So I buy another box that has a clean face and I swap it. There, I have a mint box. Who likes junior mints? I love them.

It would not be difficult. Just DO NOT force it. The chassis should come out easily. There are several screws that are in obscure locations and easy to miss. If the chassis does not want to go, it means there are more screws still attached which you missed. Also, it's highly recommended that the tuner be situated at one extreme or the other. It will make it much easier to re-align the needle together when reassembling. Unlike most boomboxes, the tuner needle on the M70 is not attached to a string. Rather, it sides freely and locks onto a peg that is affixed to the tuning cord. Also, if I recall correctly, the top panel needs to be removed BEFORE the front case. Be careful with the program button to prevent damaging it when removing the knob. It is recommended that you hold the switch (try small screw driver) while you lift the knob.

I'd recommend that you pick up a copy of the service manual. It will be very helpful and everything I suggested here is apparent in the Service Manual.

As for custom painting the case, the bad thing about the M70 is that the graphics are silkscreened directly onto the plastic case. Therefore, painting the case will destroy the graphics. Recreating the graphics is no small feat and probably the biggest challenge in giving your M70 a newly painted facelift. The easiest boxes to repaint are those with aluminum or stainless trim pieces wherein the graphics are imprinted.

Good luck and do let us know how your project progresses.

Im not talking about a small scratch. I saw a beautiful M70 that was absolutely mint except for a long deep scratch beside one of the speakers. Rest of the box was perfect.

sand down the gouge in the body after prep, then fill it in with filler or epoxy. then shoot it with paint and clear, good as new ;-)

Be careful what you ask for, TRC. It just might come true. In fact, I'm sending all my cases to you from now on to paint. :-D

Wait, I'm serious. :-D

I really am! :-D
