Hi everyone! Been a while but wanted to see if anyone can help me sort this great boomer I bought at an estate sale.
C4D18DB4-59FF-4597-A4E1-5878A410AD95.jpeg

it powers on and radio plays. No hissing or humming but the left channel is really weak. Sound like nothing from the woofer and the tweater is barely audible. I’ve cleaned the pots annd switches and record bar. I cleaned the phones jack and audio come through left and right w headphones. Going to try a different speaker laterto See if it’s just a blown speaker. Any other ideas?

the other issue is the cassette. The ff and rew both work fine but play does not do anything to the tape though I can see the motor and one of the belts connected spinning. Somehow it’s not transferring to the cassette. I swapped in two new belts and have to mention there wasa third really wide belt loose in the motor/ flywheel area. I could not for the life of me figure out where it was supposed to go. There didn’t seem to be a spot for it. I had to wonder if ithad just surrounded the flywheel as it’s a beer perfect match in circumference. Anyone seen anything like that. I’m thinking maybe it is a drive belt and I need to look a little closer. Here’s a pic of that wide belt and how it was sitting loose in the cassette area.

let me know if you have any thoughts
Thanks
Jamie

Now that I’m looking at the pic of the big belt closer I’m pretty sure that is must be a drive belt. Maybe it goes around the flywheel and also the motor? I’ll be checking that later tonight.

Yes you’re correct. That main drive belt might need changing as well. That’s a great box to have by the way. Good size, good looks, good sound.

Thanks! yeah even just from the right channel only it’s sounds good. Hoping I get to hear both. Any idea where to find a replacement belt for that one? eBay isn’t showing anything. I’ll see if just cleaning and getting the original belt on works at least for a while.

Update. Connected the big belt up and the cassette deck is now working and sounds phenomenal. The big belt is so odd. It sits on a rounded piece under the motor and then encircles the whole flywheel. I haven’t done a ton of boxes but this is a new one to me. Seems like it would slip off easily which it evidently did at some point. We’ll see how long it stays in place but super happy it’s working. The motor is super quiet. Nice mechanism really.

As for the left channel I think I have that figured out as well. I took an old known working speaker I had and connected it to the non working speaker and we have sound. So it looks like a blown speaker. It’s weird that the tweeter is also messed up but there you have it. I did a aa battery connect test on the speaker as well and as expected no thump or noise of any kind.

So where to source a replacement speaker for this? it’s 3.2ohm 20 watt and 7”. Anyone know a source?

7" speakers are hard to find. Best bet is to search for "18cm" speakers on Ebay or Partsexpress.
The only vintage boomers I'm aware of with that size are:
Sharp GF9494, GF505, GF508, GF9696
Sanyo MX920
National RQ-568
Asahi/Fair Mate RD820
ISP STR-850, Citizen JTR-1270
Toshiba RT-9990SM and RT-S931

I think you should just give up and ship that baby to me :)

That reminds me of the SCR-8 and Blockbuster inside, very nice to work on with lots of room.

Yes agreed! I have a src8 too and really easy to work on. Everything has push on connectors and wide open. I’d say this has even more room than the realistic.

That list of other boxes is really helpful. Thank you. Searched those through eBay and no parts speakers but will keep watching. I did find some 4ohm speakers on parts express in 7” but $140 for a set. More than I wanted to spend. I assume 4ohm would be ok, no way I’m finding 3.2 ohm in a new speaker?

also considering making a reducer ring so it would accept a 6.5” speaker. I have some Mb quarts on hand that would work if I could mount them. Planned to use them in an extra parts src8 I was trying to get going but that one appears to have a channel out and haven’t been able to sort it.
Thanks again!

6.5 could work as long as the gasket actually makes contact with the front case of the radio. Otherwise the bass won't be any good.
Which belt sizes did you put in?

I would measure the actual woofer frame these might be a six and a half inch woofer with an oversized trim piece on the front that makes it look like 7 in.

Yeah agreed Floyd. The foam surround goes to 6.5” and the screw holes are at 6.75”. Outer frame ends at 7.25”. I have some 6.5” speakers on hand and the actually sit kind of nice. The factory screw holes with a screw in will lock in the outer edge, I just have to trim down the mount plastic so they lay flat and seal the perimeter. I fitted them and even loose they sound pretty good so going to roll with it.

It looks to me like most six and a half inch Boombox speakers would fit in there anyway. They usually have a bigger flange than the MB quarts have a very tiny flange on them I know from experience because I have a set of them I actually pounded the flanges flat on my Anvil so they would fit a six and a half inch hole.

Yeah I wish you could hear this. I trimmed off the built in plastic risers for the factory speakers and lined the mb quarts flange with some sticky backed window foam I had on hand and clamped them in and this box sounds incredible (to me at least). The tape deck rolling with the analog meters is fantastic.

This box is now my new favorite. Sorry src8. Anyone have tips on polishing the clear tuner window plastic?

Meguires makes a clear plastic polish, plast-x.
It's nice and fine so it leaves the plastic fairly clear as opposed to more abrasive cleaner/polishes.
You can use it by hand if the plastic isn't too bad or use a hook & loop pad like Floyd suggested.
