So, this week I was looking at some radio's on eLame :ebay: and saw a few "New Listings". So, I thought I would strike early and send the sellers an offer to let me BIN

The first one, got no responce :hmmm:  No real biggie, but if you want to run a store front, speak to your customers!

The second one got a reply of "...if you want it so bad, go bid on it" OK, that's one way to talk to your potential customers. My response DELETE.

Next, there was a some what of a junky radio, no battery cover, missing antennae, filthy, not working. The price was total SHIAT, no bids, 10 minutes to go....So I shoot the seller a message and asked if it didn't sell if they would consider a BIN for a mere $29 less then the ridicules price they were asking....WHAT DID I GET? No response and an immediate relisting for $20 MORE than the previous listing! :annoyed:  :bang: Thanks DICK!

Truth be known, if he would have just re-listed it for the same price I would have bought it...Now...F'em

This is why most of my radio's came from our GREAT MEMBERS IN GOOD STANDING or from Yahoo Japan :-D

Just makes me want to delete my ePay app from my phone and never go there again....To bad I have so many radio's I'm "Watching" right now or I swear I would do it    :-/

eGay suck big time  . Looks like most of the sellers are just greedy twats which think that "for collectors" description will make em rich

If I can't hit a quick cheap BIN or work out a deal with a seller behind the scenes, then I don't usually make bidding a priority. I do watch lots of items to keep myself educated.

I RARELY ever purchase anything from eBay and have the embarrasingly few (still 100% though) feedback scores to prove it.. I prefer to purchase from good standing members here whom I've gotten to know and trust. The Reputation & Respect of Your peers here in invaluable. We know each other here to buy, sell or trade better than buying from an unknown/unproven seller. I'd much rather keep our funds between Us and not involve PayPal, if at all possible. Hopefully, Our reputations can speak or themselves when selling, trading, buying among Us.

Yep, me too! I have tried the "Behind the scenes" deal, with no luck EVER! I read your guys posts and have tried to learn how to do it to no avail

TOTALLY AGREE 100%.

Buying from members = best way to buy
Buying in the wild = 2nd best
eBay = LAST :thumbsdown:

Most boombox sellers these days are 1 of 2 people:
1) Retirees who supplement their social security by going to estate sales and putting that stuff on Ebay at huge markups
2) So-called "collectors" from Concord, CA and other places who buy & resell without disclosing the full condition

I can see both sides of this complaint. As a buyer, I always want to be 100% sure that I can get something that I see and will, more often than not, pay a little extra to insure that I get it. I have had some instances where the method of contacting a seller has worked. More often that not, this hasn't worked for me.
I usually get the polite version of, "If you want it so bad, then bid!' response. Although its not my favorite response, I have to respect it and usually will bid. At least I know that he probably won't be ending it for someone else. As a seller, I see both sides. Letting an auction run its course is a gamble. Sometimes you can hit it big and get outrageous $$$. Other times, you will get less $$$ that your offer and get stuck with eBay's fees on top of it.

just like ole gordie --i buy PLENTY of non-box goodies on ebay --
and they are ALWAYS great deals --

but my decent boombox wins from ebay are very rare

my ebay boomer buying experiences recently have ranged from total rip-off nitemares :annoyed: :annoyed:
up to ' just ok' wins-
but there is always lots of risk

of course -- i agree - its always much safer and more fun to deal // trade with our members-
but in my own rare case --
i have already bought EVERYTHING i ever wanted from all you mofos :w00t:

As a buyer and seller, I totally see both sides of the coin...believe me, I'm not a happy seller either. The eBay and PayPal fee's don't leave much.

But buying radio's on eBay is such an emotional let down.

Ebay sellers locally seem to think "Fully Operational" doesn't necessarily mean that the tape deck, battery compartment, volume, function or band controls actually work!

- My last 6 Ebay purchases that were listed as "Fully Operational" all needed extensive work to get "Fully Operational". :-/

So for me, unless it's super cheap or I can view the box locally, Ebay is not where I would take the risk and spend big money.

I have only bought a couple of boxes from members so far and can honestly say I bought from genuine sellers.

James... :-)

90% of my retail shopping comes from ebay or Amazon. Most of my shoe collection can be credited to ebay. The prices and selection just can't be found at the local shopping mall. It has gotten worse for boombox shoppers because of the rip off artists and con men but I don't blame ebay for that. I guess I have been lucky because I have had very few problems as an ebay shopper and the buyer protection has helped me every time I have needed it...so I definitely love ebay.

For sure! eBay is a gamble all around. I run into issues with 1980's classic arcade machines on eBay. It seems that the trend these is for ALMOST ALL sellers to list insane Buy It Now prices and re list it every single week. The theory is if they sell one machine to one idiot every 6 months, that the profit is the same as selling 15 machines in that same time period. That hobby also has its pitfalls on eBay with not getting what you paid for. People list a machine as "Working until it just stopped" and "I have no knowledge of electronics to fix. I was told by an expert that its just a fuse." Then you take a chance thinking that its a simple fix and you find that the seller loaded a cabinet with all of his non working parts and the machine needs 6 or 7 fixes, none that would relate to each other.

I usually run from that kind of statement since I interpret that as meaning "I know something is F'd up but I'm not going to tell you, it's just something simple". If it's so simple why don't you fix it then you can sell the item for much more.

Sometimes the seller might be telling the truth, they really don't know what's wrong and don't want to deal with it but just seeing the statement above makes me leery. :hmmm:

I really should have called this thread "eBay pisses me off when I'm buying vintage electronics".

I also buy NEW stuff off eBay and am usually 100% happy! Last week I bought a flat screen TV. No complaints at all

I just hate getting out bid

I also want the prices to be what "I" want

Should I keep WHINING

Really more than anything, it's that CRUSHING disappointment after you have followed something you would REALLY like to have :w00t:

When I bought my car from a lady in Arizona, she told me she used to be a stock broker and she now made her living off eBay. She had a beautiful house on a few acres of horse property. Her and her daughter went to estate sales and then flipped it all on eBay. She said that 1980's stuff is the super hot merch and that's all she deals in.

DAMN OUR LOVE OF THE 80'S :-/
