Did you use motorcycle batteries? for portability.... How do you charge them between use?

Did you use X-overs or just rely on amp and capacitors?

I am building my own, as no large vintage box has what I want.... 4 - "8 woofers and some tweeters with cd player and aux in for my mp3. This box wil receive a flashy paint job and work 100% without a cord..... I hope :)

I have speakers, and head unit - have not decided on amp but will probably go with a CRUNCH amp 250w X 2 channels.

Thanks for any help.

As far as bateries go, small marine gel cels could give your the crank you want at the amps you need. But let's hear from some of our other experts regarding this type of use and longevity to make it worthwhile.

the doomer is not portable in the sense that it can be moved easily,i was using a lawn tractor battery to power it but ended up now using an optima red top gel cell car battery, the amp the doomer uses has built in high and low pass variable crossovers ,i have built smaller boxes utilizing dewalt power tool batteries as they have lots of power and are rechargeable ,there are many different types of batteries you can use just the power tool batts where readily available to me and they work great not to mention for the power they have they are very light weight plus i can just swap the batteries when they are dead.

See I'm looking to keep it no more that 8" wide, therefore using three lawn & garden 12 volt wired in parallel. The box will be heavy but fully portable. Optima has some 3 cell 6 volts I could wire in series, but is not cost effective. So far my build list of what I have planned is:

1 - JVC head unit with remote $90.00
1- Crunch amp $100.00
4 - Jamo 8" (8ohm wired in parallel = approx 4 ohms) $60.00
2- Jamo soft dome tweeters $30.00
2- 2-way crossovers $25.00
Wood 3/4" MDF $30.00
Wire $25.00
Batteries $100.00

Prices are higher than what I'll spend just a est.

I was going to use two C100F transformers to power radio on AC mode.

just those 3 batteries alone will weigh close to 40lbs if they are the garden tractor type and the amp/head unit and speakers will add another 10 to 15lbs the case made out of 3/4 inch mdf around 10 to 15 lbs , i mean youre lookin at a box that will be 50 to 70 lbs when complete.

As long as its movable, I'll consider it portable.... lol better dust off the weight bench.

Just wanna play with it and see how it turns out.

Holy crap Johnny if you tote that thing more than a few hundred feet your going to end up with two different length arms.
You better use both arms equally so you don't look like your half Gorilla.

you are missing something from this list that will make your life much nicer.

wheels.
seriously man a box this size should have some removable castors under there.
i mean i used to have a old keyboard amp and it wieghed eighty pounds, and well carrying a eighty pound weight in one hand is pretty difficult not to mention hard on your back. also i dont care who you are you are going to get really really really tired after the first few minutes of it.
i mean the way you carry it and the way it moves you around is HARD.
wow i am thinking back now to the time where i carried it through the university up here to jam with a guy in a electronic music workshop and it damn nearly killed me and that was only about twenty five minutes of walking with it.

wheels man wheels.
if you arent going to put wheels on it make sure to put some really really good handles on it. like the kind they use for guitar amps those rubber straps with the metal plates .
cant wait to see what you come up with.

....and take plenty of pictures also. The idea of a possible home made option to large blasters is one that has interested many of us for some time.If it turns out OK,I for one would be very interested in possibly using it as a guide to build my own unit.Threads like this are of top shelf interest to me.Good luck and thanks for your cutting edge efforts : )

You know, I've been thinking of designing a boombox, but not a DOOMER (which I haven't yet seen any in my life so some pics would be very helpful).

I'm studying industrial design and it would really be awesome if allof us came up with a design that had our inputs and knowledge... Just like they doin other forums like for example the TapeHeads (which I also belong to) they collect tapes and decks, etc. and they came up with a brand new tape brand called "Phoenix" and they made it together (or not all 100% of the people there but a knowledgeable group did)...

Whaddaya think about this idea? Maybe we can get even a mold made in the U.S. with all the contacts and people you all may know there and who knows???? :hmmm: :hmmm: :hmmm: :hmmm: :hmmm:
