Does Size Matter?

Two questions:

1) Obviously - as I can prove by pitting my JVC RC 656 against my Mag D8443 - bigger does not necessarily mean better. But does everyone think there is a certain nostalgia value to the bigger boomers?

2) What is the absolute biggest (non-custom) boombox ever in production or sold (preferably in inches across...) I believe I saw on another post someone bought a short, very long vintage piece, possibly with three tape decks (correct me if I am wrong...)

1) Yes there is to perceived value and cool factor in general. No it does not directly corralate to performance since it's the quality of the materials, workmanship and design that count. There are some smaller boxes that can kick the crap out of a lot of much larger boxes as you found, some of the biggest boxes made were minimally enginereed plasted boxes designed almost entirely for the Awe Factor.

2) I believe the Wheelie, JC2000, Elta MasterBlaster (there are other AKA's) are the biggest at suitcase size dimensions. I've never had one so I can't give you the dimension but they are something like 36 X 18 X 8, I'll let those who know give the real dimensions.

Size definitely does not matter when it comes to boomboxes. Like you found out - quantity does not equal quality (of sound). However, I would agree that there is probably more nostalgia associated with the larger models.

I believe there was a boombox that had several AKA brands and was close to 46 inches wide - but only about 10 inches tall. I used to have a picture of it somewhere, but lost it apparently.

:agree: Fatdog if we are talking width only, I remember seing the picture but can't remember the model. It gained extra width by having Surround speakers tacked on the outside of the the main speakers and it was a three piece box. I think that's the one your referring to but I could be wrong.

The Wheelie and AKA's had the most cabinet volume I believe, then again I could be wrong here too. :dunce:

I think Boomboxes came along at the point in time when the bigger is better mentality blew up.
As fast as it came, it went the opposite way. All electronics started getting smaller and more descrete. then the untimley death of the iconic blasters we love.

largest in width would probably be the Berecha/Fisher with extra satellites mounted on the ends. Kinda looks like a Sharp HK-9000. Some one has to have that pic of a cute chick holding one, I love that pic, it's rediculous!
Biggest one piece would be the Helix/Dynast/Elta/JC2000 - Wheeley.

Isn´t that the one with the mirrorball between the tapedecks? Some wired chinese brand?

I Am Legend
the largest box i own is some gigantic aimor one piece thing -
:dunce:
it sounds hollow and boring-
i listen to it - NEVER

and all its doing is awaiting a speaker and amp mod -
down the road-

so - then - it will finally be an enjoyable box --

so -- yes - size sort of matters -
as i bought it for its looks and size :-)

but size does not indicate sound quality

size matters for showing off.
quality matters for listening.
theres big and small boxes that sound great.
theres big and small boxes that sound like crud.
its all up to you .
one person might love a certain boombox. others might hate it. big and small its all subjective and personal opinion.

:agree: and exactly why nobody is totally right or wrong when they state a box is horrible or great, it's still just an opinion. :-)
