So I've noticed increased grumbling of boomboxes being difficult to sell or selling for low prices lately.

Soooo, last few days, I bid on many boxes and won NONE. Only thing I succeeded to accomplish was drive up the sales price of those respective boxes. While I was completely prepared to purchase any of those boxes at my bid price, as so often is the case, I ended up ONLY bidding the sales price up. While looking at the bid history, it appears that if it were not for my bid, the sales price could have been as much as 20 - 30% lower. That would've been great if I won it. As it were, I did not and someone else paid more than if I sat out on the action.

I guess I'm doing my part to help prop up boombox prices :-D

.........AND bad for me too, having won none.

But.... I'm holding my ground and not giving in since I expect to take advantage of the slowness of boombox sales. "see my signature." Time to capitalize on opportunities....

Theres always going to be at least one person that wants a box as bad as you and is willing to pay as much as you. To be honest, I don't mind paying a little extra for a mint box, but nothing crazy. I paid $400 for my 931but it is brand new..Yeah I could have gotten one cheaper. I paid $300 for a mint 777, which I thought was cheap. Thats the way it goes, you win some you lose some.

You're a trooper, Superduper! :-D

Every now and then I'll see a boombox that requires a bid of me. Sometimes, I'll just throw my maximum bid on it and walk away and then not realize I won the box until I get the e-mail from eBay. That has actually happened a couple of times.

Some generalized observations regarding boombox auctions:

1) Newbies and cheapos generally bid using the minimum bid technique

2) Average collectors generally bid in $25 to $50 increments (approximately)

3) Big time collectors generally bid in multiples of $100

4) Kingpin collectors generally snipe at the end with an outrageously high amount

Always get a feel of who might want the box before bidding and bid accordingly.

FD, I don't worry much about those low feedback bidders that make small $2 increments to get to the top. They almost always get outbid by more serious bidders later. However, getting a feel for the competition is not as easy as it once was when feedback and profile was openly available. Of course, most bidders bid in the final minutes anyhow and I'm part of that crowd since I have found through experience that my chance of successfully winning something drops to near zero if I place a bid and walk away unless it's a less desirable box or my bid was higher than what I'd consider a "deal." In those cases, I almost always find that I will eventually get outbid by 1 increment, be it $0.50cents or $2.50. Nowadays, having acquired most everything that I really "wanted" I'm bidding primarily for fun and not need. Therefore, I take the attitude that IF I get it at a good price, then good.

What bugs me the most, however, is that I'm generally not getting outbid by 5 guys. I'm mostly getting outbid by 1 bidder. I guess that means I'm placing a good, honest, reasonable bid but someone else REALLY REALLY wants it.

If you don't have two bidders who are willing to pay then the prices stay low, the crazy prices we've seen almost always come from two bidders battling. I've been guiltly of pushing these bottomless bank account nut bags just because they piss me off. I sometimes get sick pleasure out of watching a walking wallet pay hundreds more for a box than they would have if we left them alone. I guess that makes me guilty of pushing prices on occasion too. :hmmm:

Of course there is always the danger you might win so pushing the price for no other reason than to push a price is risky to the extent that you may end up paying more than you bargained for.

If you pay more than you bargained for AND the box ends up not quite as nice as described, then you'll be: :annoyed: :bang: :evilmad:

That be true...

But if you KNOW it's a prize of a grail...nickle and dime it and watch the price bounce....he'll be ahead of you 99.9% of the time...

Only a problem if your the high bidder. When people put in multiple high bids then it's easy to bid in between their bids simply driving up the price they would have paid.
