Just got another one of these. You guys who haven't experienced one in good nick are missing out.

Is it the Crown 850 on steroids? Nah not really, more like the 850 on HGH or Botox. It's the living-room version of the 850....warmer, more mature, more luxurious, less "street".

Is it as loud or as powerful as an M70? Of course not, but the bass is DEEP, RUMBLING.....it's tha shiat!!! And the Wide setting is just about perfect from 8-10 feet away......Not "fake" sounding like a lot of Wide settings.

And doze metal knobs doe....

3 needle meters...

no longer have it -- wonderful sound ....

recall its about 10% bigger than the 850
5% smaller than the m90

I've always liked the Crown 850/980 boxes - they've got the look and, somehow, they produce nice bass!? Like all these old boxes, it does depend on the condition of the example you're listening to. I've personally heard 3 Crown 850s - one sounded really sweet, the other two sounded equally knackered with no bass or treble! Just a flat, lifeless sound indicating very tired internals.

Whilst the M70 would be louder, I can't honestly describe the big JVCs sound as 'sweet'. It's certainly loud, indeed the loudest mid sizer I've heard but it's not a box I'd sit beside in front of an open fire listening to some low level tunes.

If your 980 can fill that sort of roll, than it might just be the best sounding mid sized Boombox!

Congrats by the way,

James.... :-)

I'be been cranking my CSC-950L today - a bit of soul'n'funk and it just purrs along - that great Crown sound in a smaller package.
I also have a CSC-850 that then drops the bass down further and guess I got lucky as my one sounds sweet on lows, mids and highs.
I've not heard any other Crowns but will definitely be looking out for either a 970 or 980 having read a lot of great reports on their sound too.
As it happens, I have never had or heard a M70 (cue gasps of shock from the crowd) ... but one such box is literally in the post to me ... so soon I will be able to hear for myself and comment ... can't wait to see if the M70 hype lives up or whether my Crown sound kicks it into touch (at low volumes anyway, as I understand the M70 probably goes louder stronger).
Anyway, congratulations on your new 980 ... amazing boxes these Crowns and I think you just can't get enough of them and I recommend anybody without a Crown CSC-850/950/970/980 to seriously look one out and give it a test drive :-)

imho
i suggest that all boxes with 7 to 8 inch speakers should not be in the ' medium ' category--
they should fight it out with the big boys ............
so the crown 850 , 980 , rising 20/20 etc are biggies

Well, but then you'd have to separate the C100's and Super Jumbos from the rest of the "large" boxes.

I never knew these boxes had no handles. Do all crowns like this just have the strap loops?

Only for information, the sound of M70 in open space (try to hear in good speakers or headphones)

Cheers.

Thanks for the review Reli. Wish we were able to develop comprehensive write ups like that in wikiboombox for all of the models. Unfortunately, we here in the USA aren't privvy to all the worldwide models, so we need help from some international users.

Hi Reli - I see your WBB CSC-850 page is lacking a decent picture - you are welcome to use my picture for it if you like - see attached :-)

Absolutly amazing design. But I'm just lost on it.

OK, while over the shoulder, hanging from a strap you've got all your controls at hand AWESOME!

But WTF is with the antenna's? How are you going to open those while walking? Not that having antenni open on any box is easy while on the go, but still.

I bet that battery box ended up lost often. Any time you have parts that detach they go missing.

Stick, that is just RAD in it's odd design.
