has anyone been crazy enough to re-belt a sansui cp-99w? :grim:
On mine FF, REV are fine but play on both decks is at high speed almost like it is stuck on high speed dubbing. There is a whirling sound coming from one or both decks when I power the box up, that stops after about 6 seconds.
The thing is an insane dismantle....

My main question is how to remove these white clips? Are they plug ins or solder? I don't want to rip one out but I cannot get any further until I unplug about ten of these white clips, I spread them and tugged but nothing.... Or am simply not operating the hugely complicated decks correctly!

Any thoughts or advice appreciated. :-D

Blah Blah, try pushing the white clips down towards the pc board, they might release the ribbon cables. Just a hint,if you do get them to release ,just be sure to remember which direction they were in the clips and make sure the wires get back to their original location,otherwise...... this could be you...

Try to push down in the direction of the arrows. And pull out the ribbon wire "gently but firmly" at the same time.

The Sansui homer is here! Those are compression clips. Press down and the wires will release. Be carful to marke the direction they were in so that you put them back correctly. Rebelting one of these is A PAIN as just getting to the decks themselves is no fun. I still haven't finished mine (started saw how much time I had...quit) but need to before the next Sunshine Mix.

As always thanks guys! :-D I was not using the right technique on those ribbons....I will let you know how horrendous it gets further down the road, it is quite a hairy box to deal with.

rimmer you may be right, the belts seem very strong in FF, REV and way TOO strong in play! It is not the usual symptoms for bad belts. I have a service manual for it but it really is the most complicated box I've had a crack at :-O

it look to me like if you remove those white plastic clips where the snaps are at the base of the ribbon cables the wires should just slide right out .

Check and verify the voltage levels going to the motors...if there is to much it's a sign of other issues. :hmmm:

Do both decks play like the smirfs only faster? if so it could be both your ajustable Vr's up the spout you can buy them on epay for about 50p but you have to get the correct voltage ones as to allow the correct volts to the motor.

a little update: pulled the whole thing apart last night, figured out how to get around unclipping all the wire ribbons (god those suck).

both belts were sticky melting globs, i guess FF and REW are direct drive? i replaced both, reassembled the whole mess, and deck A now plays at correct speed but with almost no sound, deck B is stuck in play and i didn't get the eject latch set right when i reassembled.

i gotta go back in and see if i can get B to pop off play, reset latch and see if there is a bad connection on the deck A wiring.

god, i love this box but what a PIA!

it is an epic box in all regards old skool including an epic PIA! Although I could now change the belts in about 15 minutes now that i have dis-assembly memorized

OK so deck B is fixed  Deck A is still messed up though. The tiny black ground wire to the tape head was disconnected. This wire is like a human hair or less. I tried reattaching, splicing, soldering, everything...it is so freakin tiny and short. I am giving up for today, i have no desire to get inside the head....

Maybe next time :-D

thanks for all the help guys!
