The problem I have is that I can not get the line-in or the radio tuner to work. It seems as though when I power it on that it only powers on with 50% power. The power light is not as bright as it use to be. When I hit any of the cassette keys, the cassette run lights do light up as they should (the cassette player doesn't work but I'm not worried about that)

When I turn on the alarm sensor it does go off at FULL BLAST so the speakers do still sound great. I just don't know what the prob is with powering it on and the line in/radio tuner not working anymore.

if anyone could give me some advice. I've never opened one of these before.

Shooting in the dark here but did you check the voltage selector switch to make sure it's in the proper voltage setting. I learned that when I got a radio from china and germany. Just a shot in the dark....

Yeah, I did. It's at 120v, so it's fine. I tried with batteries as well, but still no good.
I noticed that I can hear the music very faintly when I put my ear very close to the speaker.

Here's what the inside looks like.. I took mine apart and cleaned/lubed all the switches.. I would try that first, especially the function switch.. I'm not an electrical genious, so I don't know why it wouldn't be powering on 100%...? :hmmm:

hmmmm . . . I've never took one of these apart. What do you use to clean the inside?

It's real easy to take the back casing off, just unscrew the screws.. I got the can of electrical contacts cleaner & lube from Radio Shack..
Sprayed it in all the switches and worked them back and forth quite a few times.. Took care of the static, but if that doesn't help your powering up situation, I don't know what to say..

ok. Thanks a lot I just now took it apart. I won't be able to go to radio shack until tomorrow though.
How do I get to the switches to clean/lube them?
If you could just be super detailed real quick it'll help alot. Thanks!
Is there a certain way you need to clean them?

After you pull all the knobs off the front, that large circuit board that the switches are mounted on can be removed from the box..
After you take out the 6 or 7 screws and disconnect the wires going to it.. But you also have to take out a couple screws where the power and alarm switch are, so the pin connector for the wires can be removed.. It's a white pin connector that attaches the power & alarm circuit board to the big circuit board with all the switches..

Before you attempt to remove that circuit board with the switches, unhook all the wire connectors going to it!
There are some hidden ones on the left side, a couple on the bottom I think, and the wires going to the motion sensor..
Just take your time and check it out, it's pretty easy!

The cleaner/lube comes with a spray straw, so just find an opening on the switches where it looks like the contacts are and squirt some in there and work them back and forth.. It definitely helps to clean them and gets rid of the static..
Don't forget the power switch! It kind of sounds like it's not getting full contact of current when turning on, also the volume switch and function switch..
Both of mine have a faint sound out of the speakers even when the volume is turned all the way down..

thanks for the info. I've got the function switch board off and everything. Where are the "contacts" located? Do I just spray the base of the switches and stuff with the spray?

You want to try to get the cleaner inside the base, if there is a hole in the side of the housing or through the switch shaft itself..

ok thanks. And what do you mean by 'work them back and forth' while I clean them?
And is there anything else I should do to clean the inside while I have it opened?

I did try with batteries, and it still didn't work. However, they were not brand new; so brand new ones could be a good shot. But, if it doesn't work with the ac cord, then it's probably the same story with the batteries. But, I may buy some fresh batteries with the spray.

Try and clean power switch and function switch real good with a contact cleaner. Spray a small amount into small hole and work switch on and off 20-30 times ....

The contact spray didn't do the trick. But, I think I may have figured out the problem: The auxiliary cable does not work. I tested it out on a lot of other equipment and it does the same thing as my boombox which is no sound except for when you put your ear right up to it. So, I will purchase a new one and hopefully that will fix the line-in problem which is my main concern.

I would first test the output of the transformer board, you should be getting 15+ volts DC. If your power is very low then it's a power problem....
