The tape counter works
The led works when it wants to ff and rw it works for a longer period before the lights pause
Play the lights don't move while the counter does
Counter seems slow so but if the counter is working I think the led should work to
The led was working perfect earlier tonight after 3 tapes I noticed it wasn't moving

There are 2 separate wheels that the belt running off the right spindle turns. It is very possible that the control box that runs the tape run LEDs has more drag than the tape counter.

My bet would be that the belt is starting to get loose and worn. A SBS8.9 to SBS9.0 replacement will get you up and going. That is where I would start.

If after belt replacement you have the same issue then the LED control box has worn spindle bushings. If that is the case there are posts on how you can correct this somewhere here on Boomboxery.

Here's a shot of the TC-999 I restored, I think it's got the same guts. You can see the gearbox on the left. It's the upper shaft that may need help staying straight.
