I’m sure ANY MP3 player with standard headphone out would work. Have heard good things about the FIIO brand of MP3 players though.

What's wrong with a gen 2 IPOD?? Another "newer" MP3 player is not going to sound different / better....at least enough to be detectable....

If they claim it, they are lying. I believe with digital it's really the quality of your source material (i.e., MP3 vs FLAC). Now they claim to have an even "better" format. I can't recall the name...and I'm not much into digital medial...so I'm not the best to explain.

It's more than just the format. It also depends on how strong the preamp is on the source device so IT CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Before you claim about any lies, you should try through personal experience rather than make a blanket statement like that. The FIIO devices are not cheap. Another member here (mellymelsr) swears by them and says they make a world of a difference. That is only 1 of many hifi brands out there. I know that my iPod/iphones can struggle sometimes, especially on strong tracks or on devices with weak sensitivity.

Last year I bought a Pioneer XDP-100R for use with my Grado 325e. I went back and forth with my Nano 4th Generation, over a couple of different listening sessions. Although I really wanted to note an improvement, to validate my purchase, I didn't. At one point I had sat down with my eyes closed, with a friend switching from DAP to DAP and I could not tell which was playing and I was even using Apple 256 kbps files with the Nano. I sold the Pioneer a week later, and had to eat $100.

I don't own any headphones that are particularly difficult to drive. If I ever did buy a pair, which I don't think I will as I'm happy with the cans that I own, maybe I would need to supplement the Nano with an external amp.

And sorry SuperDuper. In the future I will explain my experience, and not just the conclusion that I've made from from my experience. I do realize that everyone has there own opinions...which can be partially a function of their rig.

Mellymelsr recommended the FIIO X5. He said it is a world of a difference better than standard stuff. Been wanting to try one but at $329, alas, I can’t afford one. They are up to X7 now. I’m still wanting to try the X5. Was told that it has headphones out AND true line-out. Old school Boomboxes were designed with their line-in jacks expecting true line-in level signals and not these headphone sources. They get good detailed reviews so I presume there’s something there. Anyhow, I have tried connecting an old school component tape deck vs an mp3 source into a Boombox line-in and can personally confirm that there is an improvement in the quality of the input source with a true line-out.

thanks for your feedback,

as for my ipod I was thinking that as I have had it for many years it might be worth while changing it
I was looking at the Sony NW-A45B Hi-Res Walkman 16GB MP3 Player I know you can add bigger sd card but not sure it would work due to newer tech
