Nothing will ever give you the same chrome as vacuum-metallized aluminum. ;-)

If the face of the door is all aluminum, you could have it polished to look just like chrome..

THis was my first attempt at polishing anything aluminum, its a lot of steps but its shiny like chrome!

I've tried using metal polish on aluminum, and yes it makes it shiny, but it looks way different than chrome.

Here's a link I keep in my bookmarks:

Vacuum metallizing is for plastic. I'm not sure what process would be used for your aluminum door.

wow, thanks for that link-I just found somewhere similar in the Uk and now i'm wondering what random objects I should have chrome finished, lol

Is that a muffler? Did you use an orbital buffer to do that?

Its an electric motor end cap for a WWII era aircraft hydraulic pump.. had to got through the different grits of sandpaper first..
200,300,400,500,600-1000 grit.. I think I stopped after 600 grit, thats why there are slight sanding marks on the cylinder shaped area.. This was back in 2006, but I think I went to the hardware store and bought the polishing kit that you hook to a drill..
It came with 3 different sized buffing pads and 3 different steps of compound.. THe different compounds were for different metals..
You can see it started out painted before I polished it.. (left side of pic)

That is correct! I work in the coatings research as a sr. scientist.

Vacuum metallized Al should have a top clear coat also. One of my project was to come up with a clear coat that goes over Japanese car's head light reflectors.
