Chrome Plating Plastic

This thread is for a reference of chrome plating "plastic" in small quantities. I put a lot of time and research in the area of chrome plating plastics. This place in California specializes in plating small plastic projects which is ideal for boombox parts, models, etc. Chrome plating pieces-up to 60" long is their limit.

It is very expensive and for this reason I will not have any done this time, this doesn't mean that a miscellaneous part or future project is out of the question.
Here is there contact information incase you absolutely need that one part to repair or complete a project.

It is very expensive to plate plastic as it takes at least 4 steps:
1) cleaning of the part and surfaces
2) 1st coating is of copper to prepare the plastic for the nickel (how many coatings of each may vary)
3) 2nd coat Nickel
4) 3rd coat clear or "blue coat" as it is sometimes called.

I did have a quote mocked up for reference, it was as follows:

This was our email exchange for mochup of M90 parts to be chrome plated...

Parts email & Reply...

Included in this order but not pictured in the same photo as knobs are 2 plastic speaker bezels. They are rings about 1/2" in thickness-hollow, and 8" in diameter. Not much surface area but check these photos as I have marked them. Also the tweeter bezels. They are about 5"L x 3"w at the largest point. I do not have them here to measure but they are close to that size..

One more curiousity for quotes. There is a third picture of the boombox front body case, it measures aproximately 29"L x 6"d x 17"h it is close to 1/4" in thickness...how much would that cost to have chrome plated to get an idea?

HERE IS THEIR REPLY WITH A FULL QUOTE: I was surprized the whole front body/face was reletively cheap compaired to the surface area and price of "knobs"
REPLY:
"All the small parts in photo # 1 would be the minimum charge of $15.00ea, the bezels $45.00ea, and tweeter bezels $25.00ea, the large case $125.00."

Boomboxery peeps if you have ever considered chrome plating use this as a future reference and if there is any other resource out there please ammend these quotes to keep our resources up to date.
I have considered chroming the M90 "tweeter bezels" if I win the lotto, The M90 would look so much better if only the tweeter bezel chrome matched the woofer bezel chrome.

Great info!

Honestly, those prices don't faze me too much 'cause if you really want it done and done right, you've gotta pay.

I'm glad I currently don't have any boxes with parts that need re-chroming.

For $125, it would be VERY interesting to see a chromed out M90. :-D

Thanks monchito, I saw that as well. I have found some of those kits on google in the past. There were threads on "S2g" as well. There are a lot of resources available and from country to country it varies. Eventually, if the right company gets business perhaps they will discount a large order. I asked M&M if they would discount any of this if I were to order the entire lot serviced, he honored it @ 10% off, not that I would have the work done but it's good to know.

On the otherhand, here in the U.S. there are a lot of restrictions locally regarding environmental effects of plating and the toxic poisons it produces. I think with the home kit it can initially be expensive. Also, i'm not positive, but the results may or may not be the same as a liscensed company who specializes in metalizing. I do agree however with the idea that a micro operation would be convenient and cheap in the long run but I would have to see results 1st hand to make sure it is worth the effort.

Thanks again for that resource, if you have any contact info for this- please post it :-)

Good Work!

I've got a little chroming to do on a couple of boxes. I might have to look into getting a kit to DIY

It would definitly be very interesting to see an entire blaster body chromed and with all of the other pieces intact including some paint over various parts for detail-it would be interesting. The possabilities are endless.

Make sure you do your research because i'm not too sure this ?DIY? kit is for plastic, I believe it is for metal, if it is for metal, the process is not the same process. Plastic is more extensive as you have to coat it with 2 base metals first to set the pallet for chroming. Metal plating vs. plastic plating = most metal is ready to go, such as plating a quarter for example. Plastic on the other hand needs copper 1st, then nickel as a base.
I'm not an expert but check into the differences as they are not the same process.

even thou it might be a bit expensive... the diy kit might prove good on some thing as you can see once you silverplate your plastic you plate with copper then you can plate with whatever you want maybe goldplate a m90 :w00t: :w00t: :w00t:      :hmmm:

An anodized "blue" or "red" would be sick!!! Hehe...
Imagine an M90 or M70 with one of these metalic colors as a base...
