so off to the vintage audio flea market they had in the burbs here this day.
i wasnt expecting much at all but i when i got there it had a pretty good array of old stereo stuff strewn about the parking lot.
of course i was looking for deals but i did not expect any at all. i mean the place holding it was a reseller of vintage audio gear. needless to say i was expecting there to be nothing and what was there would be overpriced.
boy was i wrong for the most part. there was a ton of old speakers and recievers for about a quarter of ebay prices. this was a real surprise to me but a good one.
unfortunately i am maxed out on the stuff i can bring into the house now and i did just scoop another vintage amp on the weekend.
what about boomboxes tho. there was a few battered and bruised minis. a nice sk550 but, there is no way i am going to pay a hundred bucks for that. i mean i might have gone for it if it was fifty and less bruised and battered.
i was about to leave and then i caught a glimpse of something hiding amongst the other stuff there. that distinct metalic black finish that the m9998k wears. i pulled a bit and slid out the beauty in the pictures below. i did notice it was badged sears but this was a box i remembered being well lauded by the owners of them. it was super dusty. i picked it up cracked open the battery cover expecting to see a tale of woa and abuse but it looked brand new inside. i was feeling pretty good at this moment in time. the box is heavy for its size and everything under the dust looked pretty solid.
i dragged it up to the guy taking money.
does it work i asked. yep he said.
how much was my next question.
five bucks the guy says to me.
you want to plug it in its just a old shitty sears boombox it should work.
no man for five bucks i will take the chance.
i split and got in the car with the aka sears/sanyo/siemens boombox on my lap. 20892 is the badge on the back.
while the wife was in the value village collecting the mother in law from her shopping for garden nomes and tea cozys for her pepper pots. i decided i would spend the time cleaning it a bit . water from the water bottle and a cloth that was all i used. as the time passed i rapidly could see i had found yet another close to unused gem of a boombox.
there is one tiny ding on it.
the question tho remained......
did it work.
we headed towards home stopping for some really good vietnamese food along the way. i cant lie i did eat really fast hoping to get home quicker but it was not meant to be...
bridge closures and extremely bad traffic tagged on about a extra 90 mins home.
well i polished a bit more and got the boombox pretty much as clean as it is ever going to get.
we got home i ran in and turned it on.
it sounds extremely good. lush and warm and full.
very much like my m9998k which has always been one of my favorites.
i went up and down the am and fm dial.
what about the tape deck this cant work i mean these boxes always have bum tape decks dont they.
woops again the deck works perfectly.
there was a bagpipe tape in there that most likely had been in there since it was bought.
the house filled with bag pipe marches and the wife and her mom did celtic dancing as it played.
i am very pleased with this score. i am glad mr pro audio didnt value the sears name and thought this boombox was junk. i am sure that if it had been badged sanyo or siemens it would have been sitting next to mr pioneer with a 150 dollar asking price.
sure is a nice boombox and i like the wierd styling of it.
