If it is not heard through the speakers, then it seems it is definitely a hardware issue. Maybe put a light coating of lithium grease on the around the hole where the flywheel shaft goes in. That's a usually a metal on metal spot.

I'll give that a try. I have white lithium grease. Is that the same stuff?

Yup, what fatdog said

You might also try a small shot of WD-40 down the shaft of the motor if the lithium grease trick doesn`t work :-)

I opened it up and stopping the flywheel or any of the other moving parts seems to make no difference. I'm guessing a bad motor is making the noise. Looking up what's printed (MMI-6A5HO) on the back yielded no results. Are these motors very brand specific? it's DC15V. Maybe there's a way to lubricate the motor.

I've had a couple of boomers that did the same thing. :annoyed:
In both instances it was because the pinch roller was not putting enough pressure on the capstan and the tape.
I rebent the pressure spring under the pinch roller and it worked.
It took a few times, but eventually it worked, just be patient.
Just my 2 cents...... Good luck with it.

I took it apart and cleaned everything I could get to, but it still made noise. I tried applying more pressure to the pinch roller, but that made no difference either. I applied a couple drops of sewing machine oil to the motor output bearing, and I haven't heard anymore noise *fingers crossed*.
