Hey all, I am helping out with a project to catalogue a load of tapes from a well know UK broadcaster. He was big in the mid 1980s and is one of the Godfathers of the UK Hip Hop scene.

Amongst the tapes I am cataloguing, there is an exceptionally heavy TDK without a case. No markings... I'm guessing this is some kind of industry standard broadcast recording high quality cassette... here's a picture...

Can you ID?? Many thanks

Hey Waxer,

I'm glad you like a bit of a chase. Those TDKs are the Holy Grail of tapes. I wished I was getting them around 1999 - 2001, you could get them as low as £3.00 a pop.

Good luck and welcome to BB.

Cheers

They really are.

But there are other tapes that are great just not as great as MA-R/MA-XG, but they too are rising in price. Look out for some TDK SA's pre 1995 for example. Sometimes you can pick these up fairly cheap. The top drawer Type II tapes SA-X, Maxell XLII-S (they are not the only ones mind) are also worthy of addition.

Good luck, do not limit your search to ebay UK, check out Germany and US as well.

Cheers

I am not 100% sure on this one, it may be the shell itself, and / or a refinement in the tape formulation as well. I am sure there are other members that can answer your question.

If I find out, I'll let you know.

Cheers

What is the difference between the MA-R and the MA-XG? Looks very similar.

Slight changes in the case and the formulation... very similar cassettes.

The MA-XG was later changed to the "green-case" version. And for the 60-minute green MA-XG, the tape was back-coated. The green MA-XG C-60 was considered TDK's ultimate tape.... C-90 was not back coated because it would have made the tape too thick...
