ok after reading online about this transmitter i decided i would give it a try i mean its not super cheap 70 bucks plus shipping but hey.
http://www.amazon.com/Crane-FMT-Digital ... B0000E6I1N

it came from ebay lol.
so yeah i got it today unboxed it. there is a few extras with it.
a adapter a rca to eigth inch female cable.
on first inspection it looks nicely put together simple design nice rubber feet on the bottom of it. so you can lay it flat or stand it up. nice little power button and lcd display. no back lighting on it but hey i can deal with that.
my first gripe is the built in audio cable. you just know that is going to fail at some point. i would much rather have had a eighth inch jack with my own cable going into the unit.
it seems pretty study but these things always fail at some point. so this is a negative for me. the included rca to eighth inch female cable is a nice thought but really this unit should have rca jacks and a eighth inch jack on it.
the next gripe is the rotary pot for volume your typical crap pot like off a cheap am transitor radio. this is something i am thinking wont last but hey i will do my best to be careful with it.
the antenna is short really short but it is a antenna none the less.
so how does it work right out of the box.
using a good tuner not a boombox i got about six or seven feet of range i plugged in the pc550 and with that i got about four or five feet away.
the sound of it was pretty good on the big stereo on the boombox not quite as good but i wasnt expecting it to sound as decent as it did.
the thing with this unit is they have a pot inside of it that affects the range. we get them here in north america with them set at a lower setting to appease the fcc.
i am always leery of anything i have to fix right out of the box. there is sites online that show you how to take the thing apart or for the more impatient like me you can take the label of the back spin a pot up and bobs your uncle.
so much for the warranty if you go my route.
did it work better after doing this.

yes it sure did i was able to get about twenty five feet of range with it and the sound is pretty good. its by no means perfect .
it is however tons and i mean tons better than the griffin i trip i mean that unit i often had to have sitting on the box for it to work i even found the included fm transmitter with the jvc kaboom to be better than the griffin.
does the c crane sound as good as a good tape deck... no it does not however i think it sounds great for what it is it is a very good sounding fm transmitter and with the mod it gets decent range.
do i think its worth the price of admission . well yes and no heres the deal lets not fool ourselves here this is not a modern device most likely this has been relabeled by c crane for sale in north america. i know i have seen fm mircrphone transmitters that look exactly the same as this unit in the past.
is it as good as that big old realistic unit you used to be able to get from radio shack. not a chance.
i would give it seven out of ten. i am happy to have purchased it and i am going to try some other things with it to see if i can get even more range. i had hoped this unit would be able to pump music through the air to all the radios in the house but thats not going to happen . i mean its a sub one hundred dollar unit.
i think that perhaps for the price it would be hard to beat it.
lastly do i think anyone with a boombox fetish should have one .
yes i do why would i give something seven out of ten that i think we should all have.
hey look so many people give reviews that are ten out of ten or perfect on things they like.
i am super picky when i say something thats ten out of ten. i mean in order for this to be ten out ten it would have to be

made out of metal.
have no adjustments needed to work at its full potential
have both rca and eighth inch jacks
a backlit display
a signal strength meter
a adapter with the lump in the line not at the wall.
if it had those features then i would give it a ten out of ten so it only gets a seven.
it is excellent once adjusted tho.
fair out of the box.

Nice review bill.
At 20 to 25 feet it's useable but around 5 feet isn't so good for $70. I'll have to put that on my someday list, what a great way to get all your boomers going.

Bill, i thought the Ccrane transmitter was supposed to be strong enough to transmit well on all floors of a house

i cant see that happening. i mean i got one floor and it just barely made it from the living room to the studio thats about twenty five feet.
i am going to try extending the antenna with a bunch of wire wrapped around a pole but i am not thinking this could go a hundred feet.
theres all kinds of reviews on this unit out there that say it can transmit super far but its just not that good.
the sound quality on it is better than most but it does not come close to the higher end tape decks.
its good but..... there are some real let downs.
