Ok guys.. i'm a huge fan of the JVC Kabooms.. i have the RV-NB20 and the first run RV-B90GY.. and honestly i prefer the boomin bass from the B90 but the B90 doesnt play MP3's off the CD deck.. nor does it have a IPOD hookup.. sure you can use the AUX IN.. but who wants the wire hangin out waiting to be yanked or your music player dropped by accident? well i did a cool thing.. kudo's to JVC.. even though the units are 10 years apart the innards are INTERCHANGABLE! yep you heard right! ok not everything is peachy.. but 99% is.. this is what i did.. i kept the B90 case.. AMP.. SUBS.. front speakers.. black endcaps.. volume and bass knob.. but you can do that with any Kabooms cosmetic wise.. this is where it gets cool.. behind the NB20 IPOD/AUX front plate is the old cassette well.. they didnt remove it.. they just reused it for the IPOD/AUX faceplate.. unscrew a few screws.. unsnap the facade.. and bingo it will fit in the same way on the B90! JVC is smart.. reuse there old design to make it work in the 21st century.. now the first run JVC's didnt have a guitar/volume input.. hmmm what to do.. once again JVC added the guitar board as a seperate piece! i just unscrewed the board.. (the board had a easily removable connector to allow and easy removal) so that problem is solved!.. all the ribbon wiring is exactly the same on both units.. tuner/CD deck.. and IPOD/AUX board all have the EXACT SAME WIRING! WOW! that is soo cool! so i transported the NB20 front face plate the circuit board that controls it.. and the CD/MP3 deck into the older B90.. i kept the front control board from the B90 as the NB20 front conrol board was damaged.. i also used the tuner board from the B90 i put the combined unit together and WALAH! EVERYTHING WORKED! i now have the frankenstien JVC KABOOM! or as i call it THE FRANKENBOOM! the only small issue.. and it's small.. the back AUX IN on the B90 does not exhist.. as the NB20 has it located on the front.. so there's a hole where the AUX IN was located.. thats the only tiny cosmetic issue.. .. i turned the unit on.. crossed my fingers.. and WOW IT WORKS 100%!! so now i have a oldschool B90 with IPOD/MP3 playback!

pics will follow..

i'm removing the goop from the B90 sub ends at the moment.. once there clean i will take pics and send them to Fatdog as i suck at posting pics here..

as far as preferring the Altec or the JVC.. they both have there pluses and minuses.. but the Altec just does more in a smaller package.. bass is tight.. it's light wieght.. runs for 30 hours on 8 "D" cells.. 7 band EQ.. but the JVC has BASS you can FEEL! nothin can touch it.. we all know this.. but the Altec isnt a slouch in that department either.. tough call.. i love em both.. and now that i can play my MP3 CD's and IPOD on the FrankenBOOM!.. it has moved up a few notches on my awesome meter lol..

o.k she's all set..
this is exactly what is different..

case is the B90
CD deck is the NB20
speakers are the B90
IPOD/AUX obviously NB20
Tuner board B90
Power supply B90
Remote NB20
front control PCB board B90 (NB20 board was cracked)
Power AMP B90
items no longer supported..
AUX IN on back.. Guitar jack w/ volume
AUX IN is now located on the front..

wattage difference located on info panel..
B90 43 watts..
NB20 50 watts..
any side effects?
nope not one.. IPOD works as intended.. tuner works as intended.. CD/MP3 playback works as intended..

any needed mods?
no.. only evidence is the 1/8 inch hole for old AUX IN.. no plastic was cut.. no damage or forced to fit pieces..

outcome?

pics to soon follow this post..

ahhh.. it worked!

as you can see it all came together wonderfully.. in all honesty any kaboom should be able to be interchangeable.. except the DP100-200.. though i'm sure they are.. but doubt you can use the same CD deck.. gotta love JVC for making use of generations of Kabooms for different purposes while keeping the fundamentals intact.. it was a crap shoot at first since circuitry could have been totally different.. and i could have fried my Kaboom! but i had a good feeling that it was gonna work.. glad i was right!

Glad to hear that some parts are interchangeable. I don't think all parts are going to be 100% interchangeable though as I've looked at parts lists before on varying models and there really are different parts for different models. Where there might be some issues is with respect to ROM chips that affect the functionality. Some models might support features not present in others that is really just a software update. I'm sure the amps and speakers are probably swappable modules.

Now, the hard part is gonna be finding parts units to salvage stuff out of.
