who post these disasters ..usually claim the box was" too close to a radiator"
or left in the sun ???
but -
asking -can these enormous warps happen any other way-
but via an electrical meltdown ?

That would take a good dose of high heat but it's possible to melt these boxes with a heater or even the sun in the right situation.

I doubt it was caused by electrical forces.

The sun can cause slow sagging and some warping. But a boombox in the sun doesn't melt only along one edge of the boombox. THIS one is most likely put too close to a radiator, placed on near a fireplace, next to a stove, etc. I could be wrong, but that's how I see it. :-D

The thing is, heat generated from electrical shorts are very focused -- think laser. Enough to cause fires. So if the heat damage was like a small 1 or 2" square area, with like a hole in the middle, then electrical. However, in order for plastic to warp and sag like that, it has to be subjected to moderate heat from a large heat source. I've tried to reshape plastic panels before with a heat gun and all I can tell you is that usually, you've got to use a very very wide nozzle and keep moving the gun back/forth to try to cover the entire area which is not easy. That's why the heat damage on that M70 really looks like from a heater, which generates a lot of heat over a long period of time. Electrical shorts, once again, doesn't last very long because typically, it's very acute and short lived with components, fuses, or whatever, usually burning out rather quickly; then unless something catches fire, will extinguish itself pretty fast.
