What do you guys use to clean the exterior of your boxes? Any special cleaner for the plastic? thanks

If the box has a painted exterior surface I use dishwashing liquid with water and a toothbrush to clean the small spaces of dust and dirt. Dishwashing solution works great on plastic as well. Then I use a liquid carnuba wax (maguires) to polish the exterior and glass. On unpainted surfaces I apply a thin layer of armor all to protect it from fading and it gives it a nice shiny surface. On chrome surfaces I use neverdull to remove oxidation and polish the chrome. For tiny spaces I use Q-tips with above mentioned cleaners and waxes. Make sure you have lots and lots of rags handy cause you will need them. Good luck with your cleaning project. I just finished an M70 that was covered with dust on the speakers and in every tiny space you can imagine, but with time and patience it looks cherry now. Hope this helps.....

Sometimes, soap and water just won't cut the grime that's on the box. That's when I pull out Orange Glo. It's an all-natural cleaner made specifically for wood. However, it works wonders on stubborn grime and really makes the chrome and antennas shine on these old boomboxes. The trick is not to use too much. All you need to do is lightly mist a cleaning cloth with it.

If you're close to Canada, you can look for Almond Glo. It will do the same thing.

Baby wipes! :-D No kidding, first thing I do when I bring a box home it wipe it down with baby wipes. They works great! The grime that doesn't come off with baby wipes I use a general purpose cleaner from the 99 cent store. That works great also. This stuff you have to use in moderation though, it will strip any screen printing off plastic if you use too much or wipe too hard.

My trick is Simple Green full strength for really dirty stuff and then Goo-Gone for paint & all other marks.
Then a super light coat of some kind of protectant(very light & only on rag or paper towel, not on boombox)
This has worked miracles for me and is my standard for cleaning-I have orange cleaner to but for super cleaning-Simple Green.
Have a good one-GB. :-)

the hotter the water the better is cleans.
i usually just take a cloth wet it. throw it in the micro wave for about twenty seconds.
put on gloves and start wiping down the boombox.
i rinse the cloth then chuck it back in the microwave.
if you do this without wearing gloves you will burn your hand very badly.
if you do this and forget to check the microwave and leave the cloth in there too long you will burn down your house.

you would be surprised what hot hot water will take off.

i am not at all a fan of using things like goo gone or goof off on any kind of plastic.
same thing with the acid based organic cleaners.
i also never use anything like amourall or other plastic conditioners on things.
sometimes tho i might raid the kitchen for almond oil.
its good for plastic.

Careful with Goo-gone as it will attack (cloud and discolor) Polystyrene! :dunce: Polystyrene is clear cassette doors, tuner windows, sometimes the entire bbx casing.

Works great on metal parts though...

I use Simple Green no stronger than 10 to 1.

Savogran Dirtex is also a good cleaner for plastic (but be careful as it is a strong alkaline).

Both Simple Green and Savogran are great for greasy type dirt, nicotine, and general cleaning.
