Hey all, I went to see my contact at my favourite local charity shop outlet because he said they 'had some radios' for me to look at. I went down there and sure enough, they did have some radios for me. There's five of them, 2 of which are a bit BPC but then there's a funky Akai one with sticking-out add-on speakers and piano-key type controls, a decent Aiwa one and a cute little Toshiba Bombeat.

The reason for the thread title is that after loading up these little guys, my car refused to start ! I couldn't believe it and it's just typical when it's loaded up with goodies for me to take home and play with.

I'm going back to the store just before closing time and the manager is going to try giving me a jump start off his car. Hopefully this will be all that is required, but I'm not too hopeful as I haven't had any starting problems or battery issues with this car. I fear the worst !! Pray for me people.....

OK well the car is going again after the application of some jumper cables. Boomboxes are now home with me. Not too inspiring although for $2 NZ a piece I couldn't say no. I did manage to get a cool Akai PJ-W30 with rotating speakers which needs a good clean. That is the best of the bunch.

For two bucks, I could get just over one of your UK pounds :-) So five boomers big and small for somewhere around a fiver is not too shabby eh ? Cheers.

The Akai is a cool box - I've had one for awhile. The 'roller style' volume knobs etc are so nice to use. 5 band equaliser and a proper line in make it a very useful box indeed.

Akai went their own way with this series of 8 D cell, four speaker models - these Akais are no joke -
Serious performers that would embarrass many mid sized one piecers.

I just dug my one out for a listen:
