I was just wondering have any of you come home late from work to find your recently ordered boombox sitting on your dark porch unprotected...placed there by some UPS/FedEx/DHL guy...well I sure have. Luckily for me my porch is far enough from the street that you would have to walk up the driveway to see it. Today I was pleasantly surprised when I found a note from the USPS delivery man on my door stating that he attempted to deliver my package but since no one was home I could either pick it up or choose to have it redelivered at a date of my choosing. I would happily pay extra shipping fees to have this type of delivery service. In case you were wondering the bbox in question is an eagerly anticipated Sanyo M9994k that arrive from China in 6 days from the date of purchase!!...I will post pics when I pick it up tomorrow morning...if his ebay pics are as reliable as his shipping I am sure I will be very happy and would highly recommend this seller from China... 6 days!! I am still blown away by that...

USPS always does that. The others don't.
They also don't charge. You'd be amazed how many people consider it an inconvience to have to go to the post office.

...an inconvenience??...if I am awaiting delivery of a $1000 grail I am happy to pick it up at the post office as opposed to having it left on the porch for some thief to pilfer...Oh well I guess some prefer the convenience of not having to leave home to get a package...I guess I will have to start requesting USPS for my grail deliveries because it is well worth the cost to ship priority mail...

however - if you dont feel so comfortable about it --
do this

1. request all your sellers to ship with 'signature required'
2. place a note on your door -to tell carriers to not leave anything

good luck with your 9994 :-D

Ira, people don't steal in your area because they are all too old to lift a package of that size, don't you know how hard it is to carry a large package and handle a walker??? plus driving away from your trailer with a large box in the back of their golf cart wouldn't look to good, as your neighbors all know that Viagra comes in a small package!!!

I bet if the carton said Budweiser on the side the local kids would have it on the beach and open in minutes!!!

absolutely

--------
one more consideration -
is that one would have to be a total moron to walk off a porch -
in front of a mini-crowd with a mailed carton - :dunce: :dunce:

and then --no boombox would fetch more than ten bucks at a pawn shop
i KNOW that !!!!

Not true. Fedex and USPS leaves my packages on my porch in front of my door. The UPS guy leaves my parcels out on my driveway, visible to everyone and sometimes behind the rear tire of my car. UPS have left packages out in the rain. One time, UPS delivered my daughters contact lenses out on the driveway floor by the bushes. We did not see it for 2 weeks, and complained to the vendor that we hadn't received it.

The point is that if not declared otherwise in the mailing by the sender, the decision of whether or not to leave parcels or leave a note falls with the delivery guy. If he feels it is safe, he will leave it. If he does not feel that it's safe to leave (urban delivery, apartments, etc), they might leave a notice.

Anyhow, like others, I have received hundreds of packages and never lost one. Your mileage may vary.

I believe anything over $300 or $500? automatically requires a signature with Fedex.

By they way, how much was 6 day shipping from China?

I confess I'm one of those. I hate having to drive to the post office and stand in a long line to pick up a package. The USPS, however, won't drop off a package that needs a signature (it will, if the package doesn't need to be signed for). Instead, the carrier will leave a "brown slip," telling me when and where I can pick up my package. Fortunately, with a few exceptions (like Express Mail), I can sign those slips, leave them for the carrier the next day, and have the carrier drop off the package the day after. That means two extra days before delivery, but I can wait.

FedEx and UPS both leave packages (FedEx sometimes puts a sticker on the door) at the recipient's door (unless the sender adds a signature requirement), although I think, at least with FedEx, you can put instructions on file as to where the driver should place a package (like delivery to a neighbor) if you're not home. I've had UPS and FedEx packages left at my front door, back door and even my garage door... out in the open! And I live on a main street in the Detroit area. It's a wonder none of them have been stolen, but, like with Ira, that's never happened. And so, despite the risk, I would still rather have a package left at my house than be told I have to pick it up.

during work going from this house to that house I see a lot of things and I've seen at some houses where they have a large wooden box next to their front door sometimes divided into different sections for the different carriers where the UPS,fed ex, USPS knows to put their packages in when no one is not home, the box is secured to the front porch somehow and when the lid closes it automatically locks. Not sure what they do if they are expecting more than one package or if the delivery people know where the key is kept ( if outside at all). This may not work the way some boomboxes are packed since some packages are really big but it is an idea for those who may live in a high crime area.

...$160....and the package was packed and sealed so well they could have dropped on my porch from an airplane and there would have been no damage....

For me, if my post office takes anything back to them because a signature is due, the box or whatever it is will be broken. It is like the mail person gets pissed and knocks it around. I would ranter have it left on my door with a shot of not being dropped a few more hundred times lol.
