I went home to visit my family this past weekend. There's a fleamarket near them that I used to practically live at. For the past few months there has been a guy there selling home stereos/turntables/tape decks for really low prices. My brother and I took a look around as I commented about how I haven't found a boombox in a few years. We left and continued on. A little while later we were walking past the stand again and I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask if he had any portables. He said yes, and picked up a Sony egg something or other. I told him I was looking for older and bigger, with only a radio and cassette deck. He said he had something in his trailer outside. He came back in with this:

I knew what it was a soon as I saw the back of it. The slot deck had a bad hum in the left channel and the AM/FM/SW switch cog is busted, but there was a sign of life. He said to make him an offer.. I hate making offers, but I said "Is $20 unreasonable?". He said, not at all. I took it home and cleaned it up. It still needs a few things cleaned, like the handle. I cleaned the head switch on the slot tape deck and got both channels back. That still needs a head cleaning. The transformer had ripped out of it's mount, so I fixed that. I set the AM/FM switch to FM internally. She's pumping out the tunes again!

I've made a habit of asking whats in back. Any time I'm telling people about any hobby I have, I always mention things I'm looking for. You'd be surprised what some people remember they have.

This is actually the second Lasonic I've found for this price at a fleamarket around here. It's a semi-rural area and I think boomboxes are considered to be foreign, inner-city noise polluters. No one seems to value them at all. I found a 975 in good shape, missing one knob, for $25. I traded it for a Panasonic RX-5150 in very nice shape. I believe it went to rambo estrada, if he's a member here. Transformer broke off it transit :sadno: .

I haven't made my mind up on what to do with this one. I would never take this one anywhere to use it. I think they're too over the top for me. I like my mid-size, well-built units. On the other hand, it's a cultural icon and it's such a great conversation piece.

Great price : thumbsup: and it's the rarer 2nd edition with single antenna :-)

I can't say I know much about the editions. I figured it was an 80's version when I saw the squared corners. Don't the knobs and tape doors typically go missing? I'm surprised everything is here. The battery cover is 100% intact as well.

Ah.... What a score. Bet you're happy with that! I haven't seen anything at a flea market or in the wild for sooooo long now. My best flea score was $20 for a Sanyo M-X920.

This box has a strange problem. When operating on batteries, if you crank it up a loud snap comes through the speakers repeatedly until you stop the tape. Then the snapping sound dissipates and stops. Could this be caused by weak batteries?

So this weekend I went back and saw the guy I bought the Lasonic from. He said he may have some other boxes I might be interested in. Well, he did. For a grand total of $40, I bought a Sanyo M9935K, a Panasonic RX-5030 and ANOTHER LASONIC TRC-931! This one is missing a handle and a tuning knob, but the function switches work and it's in the same condition as the one in this thread. The second 931 looks identical to this one but has two antennas. I am also waiting on a Panasonic RX-5250. I'd say the spell is over for sure! :breakdance:
