Hey all, I wanted to share our story from a few weeks ago with everyone, sit back and enjoy
A few weeks ago our friend and fellow collector Miles text me and David aka Dr DER about a screening of the classic movie "Krush Groove" that was going to be happening Oct 29th at Stan Lee's Comic Con at the Los Angeles convention center, and asked if we would like to attend and participate with some of our boomboxes for display while the guest panel spoke about the movie. Of course we we're pumped, and happily said YES!
The movie is more of a Hip Hop musical, with hip hop pioneers such as RUN DMC, Kurtis Blow, The Fat Boys, LL COOL J, as well as others like Shiela E, and New Edition to name a few. So we packed up the families and boomboxes in our vehicles, met out in L.A. for this great opportunity to hang out with Darryl McDaniels aka DMC, and Kurtis Blow! Thank goodness I took a handtruck for my boomboxes, poor Dave was all about the muscle carrying 2 boxes while his son, and his sons friend carried 2 boxes each.
Then, it was showtime! We literally had to be set up in like 10 minutes, but somehow, we did it. While I was adjusting the settings on my chrome LASONiC, someone from behind me asked, "Do all these work?" As I turned around to answer, it just happened to be DMC from RUN DMC! I shook his hand and gave him the homeboy side hug as if I have known him for decades LOL, then told him that yes, they are all functional, most with fresh D batteries. He was totally cool, and was blown away by our display. Kurtis Blows sons were mind blown when they saw our boxes.
Thanks to Miles transmitter, We all tuned our boxes to the same FM station, which allowed the audio from the movie on the big screen be transmitted out of our boomboxes out to the audience, which was realllly sweet. The voices of Kurtis Blow, DMC, and the rest of the guest panel were also transmitted through our boomboxes as they talked. It was Really really cool to see the led's and the dustcaps on the OSAKA flicker when DMC would get excited and loud. Afterwards it was time to break it all down. A few folks came up from the audience and asked some questions about our radios, and took pictures of em as well. They LOVED em.
We decided to head over to DMC's comic booth which was really close to Miles and Mark Davis booth. We had tons of stuff signed by Kurtis Blow and DMC, including our boomboxes, our old cassettes, records, DMC's comics etc... Everyone in the place LOVED the radios. Kurtis Blow and DMC we're so humble and cool to be around. We had an absolute blast! Dave exchanged contact info with Kurtis Blows son and DMC's manager in hopes of eventually locking in an interview for Boombox Magazine, so stay tuned...I want to thank Miles for giving us the chance to be a part of all this. It was such an honor to meet these hip hop legends that I have been listening to since I was a kid! Heres some captured moments from it all.
