Boombox auxillary speaker outputs

Both of my boomboxes have 1/8" speaker outputs. My question is - why?

They don't have enough juice to drive stereo speakers well, and the internal speakers sound great. Was there some common application for these speaker outputs that I'm missing? I don't think I've ever seen anyone use them.

Actually boomboxes are much more powerful than they look like (I am referring to top of the line boxes from major brands).
Just try connecting a decent box to external speakers and see the audio quality, with full Bass & Treble response.

I play my boxes like Panasonic RX-7000, Akai AJ-505 etc. through a pair of Sansui S-900XD speakers (with 9 inch woofers) and they sound like playing through any regular amplifier.
