Boom boxes with large speakers

Having recently acquired the Clairtone 7980, it made me wonder how many other boom boxes were made with 8 inch or larger speakers? I don't remember seeing many back in the 80s and 90s, but maybe I just wasn't looking.

The elta master blaster has 10 inch speakers and is the largest one piece boombox ever made.
There are several aka models as well .
There's probably at least 50 other boombox models that have 8 inch speakers .

Ok the only sharp with 8 inch speakers was the gf 9000 and jdm version the gf 535.
Even sony had at least one large boombox with 8 inch speakers.
The mighty jvc rc m90 has 8 inch speakers.

Also the techsonic j1 super jumbo has 8 inch speakers . the chrome dust caps on the j1 are the largest of any boombox with 8 inch speakers. Plus the magnets are larger than any boombox with 8 inch speakers.
Although I've seen even bigger magnets on a. 5 inch aiwa speakers from the cs 880 .

Does it sound as good as it looks? Certain features sure do look like the Conion C-100F, for example the handles beside the speakers, and the LED bar graphs. I haven't been able to find any internal photos, it must be extremely rare!

Sound and Looks vary a lot! For that reason, we collect many of them.

Some are there to remember that time period in our lives. That is why mono boomboxes takes its place.
I remember many of them in those early days. Way back in 1977, it was mind blowing to see a JVC RC550 someone carrying in one hand and a brief case in the other hand walking out of a plane. So many control buttons on it and was wondering what they will all do!

I had a Panasonic RF-5310 at that time, and I thought that is the biggest box out there.

Then small stereo models came in the market, and they grew bigger in size.

I almost fainted seeing a Sharp GF-555 in a duty-free shop.

The list goes on and on....

I am still fascinated by these boomboxes, and it makes me feel young!

The last time I had a elta was around 1990 and I honestly can't remember how it sounds. These are not all that rare but they do command a high price .

Wow you actually had one? I remember reading about it in Popular Electronics but that was as close as I got to one back then. I remember being impressed by the alarm function and the wheels, but thinking if you're going to go that far why not just get a stereo?

I bought mine after seeing a tv commercial advertising the boombox as the largest in the world. It was cool but the thing is massive and I already had a vz 2000 and a jvc rc m90 and in the small room I was renting it was just too much . I traded it to my buddy for a subwoofer box for my monte Carlo .
I did buy a lasonic Trc 935 and that was much more manageable size wise to fit in my room.

A family member had an m90 in the 1980s, I will always remember that as the nicest and most impressive boombox I've ever seen. I can understand why it was your keeper!

Exactly .
Even to this day to me the m90 is the nicest and most impressive looking boombox.
It's only my opinion although there are many impressive boomboxes .
I will say that the panasonic rx 5350
Is another awesome boombox and probably in the top 3 along with the m90 and the conion c100 aka clairtone 7980 .

The elta is no contest against the clairtone 7980.
The build quality of the clairtone is leaps and bounds better .
I owned a clairtone 7980 one of my complaints was it ate batteries like tic tac's .

The Hitachi BTL output ICs in the Clairtone can draw a lot of power. It's set up like a car radio. I think it has good sounding speakers and decent cassette mechanisms too.

The plastic case seems poor quality though, and the internal layout is functional but chaotic. I'm glad you mentioned that the Elta has poor build quality, it will keep me from looking for one!
