i'm new here, so excuse me if i post in a wrong place or whatever
i bought a boom box because i'm sick of this computer life and now i feel good, but i have a problem>
i put there "normal" batteries that cost me 8 x 1.50 euro and it just plays too quiet, whenever i raise volume it switches off speakers, i thought something wrong with speakers
but then i plug it into power at home and it sounds loud and i can play it very loud with all extra bass

which batteries should i buy?
i need it to PLAY LOUD in the street and play super bass - that's the main thing

NiMh rechargeable 4000 mAH ?
or 9000 mAH ?

but rechargeable are only 1.2 V not 1.5 V

please help me

thank you so much

Welcome!! Which boombox do you have? Some boxes, especially Telefunken Studio 1 does not play as good with batteries ;-)

Do they sell Alkaline batteries where you are? They are 1.5V each but NOT rechargable.

The problem is probably that the radio is requesting 12V (8*1.5V) - but you are feeding it 9.6V (8*1.2V).

One solution would be to create an external battery pack that contained 10 of your 1.2V batteries to produce the 12V that is requested by the radio - at least that way you could test if it is in fact a low voltage situation..

Someone will chime in if I'm completely off course which sometimes I am

Good luck!

Batteries vary in capacity & quality, cheap D cells can be a AA cell wrapped in a D cell case

Do you mean the whole box shuts down or just the speakers cut out? If the whole box powers off there is not enough current from the batteries to run it, if the speakers only cut out there is a bigger issue to be addressed with the unit. My guess is the batteries you brought are no good.

1.2V vs 1.5V is not a big issue and I would not worry about it. Most single use batteries will only give 1.2V under load.
The mAH is the amp hour rating, the higher the value the longer they will last before recharging, this includes holding the rated voltage before the discharging drops it.
example: a device using 1000mA running 4000mAH batteries would drain the said batteries in 4 hours, 9000mAH = 9 hours, this is a very simplified answer and does not reflect the actual time they would last in your box.

thank you all for answers

it is not nicest boombox like most of you guys already have - i will buy one like that in few months probably, but this one is i think from the 90's
and it was just enough good for me to take it close to the lake when i went swimming i wanted to play loud my favourite music so i'll kill that bullshit noise from
cellphones and ipods

it is JVC RV-B550
and i can't play it as loud and with that extra bass with batteries as i can when it's connected to power
but sure right here they don't really sell good batteries, so i guess i will order some through internet

one friend from US already told me that only duracell will make it, so i don't know
maybe if someone has exactly this boombox can help...

that external battery pack - you know - when i go out with boombox i don't really feel like carrying another battery box

On batteries, that boombox is getting 12 volts with brand new alkaline batteries. If you use NiMH instead, voltage will drop further to only 9.6 volts at full charge.

But on AC power, it receives 15 volts. This is enough of a difference to where the performance will be noticeable.

You might want to check and make sure that the battery terminals are not corroded and thereby limiting the current available to the boombox.
