As a Stax records (Stax-O-Wax) fan I have a special appreciation for this band. Most of the hits that came out of the "Little hidden gem in Memphis", had this band behind them as they were the primary session players. Booker-T Jones was also a lead producer alongside Issac Hayes and did many of the arrangements for the Stax artists of the late 50's when the label was Satellite Record's (named after the record store the label was started at founded by Jim
STewart and Estelle
AXton), 60's era (when it became Stax) and some 70's.
What made them really special was that in an era of segregation, this was a very much integrated band. Stax was a pioneer in this as they also had other integrated bands on the label.
Their sound was so unique in the shaping of the "Memphis" sound and "Southern Soul", they were often tapped by other labels such as Atlantic to play background for artists such as Aretha Franklin. It also led to distribution deals with Atlantic as well.
I wear my "Stax" t-shirt and play my 45's proudly with the old "Stax-O-Wax" logos and the "Snapping Finger" logos.
