The 1st seller is full of sh*t! To me, he's just trying to hype up the tapes in order to sell 'em. Unless he has proof/quotes from reliable sources/links to back up those claims, his words mean absolutely nothing... Still, those Sony tapes are very good. I don't think you can go wrong no matter which tape you buy. ;-)

1 Sony for 4.99 and 5 of the TDK Super Avilyns for 5.99.

It's a no brainer. Go with the TDK's!

Agree with the above, I got some Sony SR100s (Type IV Metal) from ebay a while back, They were about £3.50 each delivered, much cheaper than what the first seller is asking, but more expensive than those TDKs which are Type II. They are excellent quality and look pretty cool too. In my opinion though, ebay isn't the best place to get tapes. "In the wild" they go for absolutely nothing because shops don't expect people to be collecting [boomboxes] and paying a lot for them.

Sony UX Pro is a great tape, but so is the TDK SA. 6 pounds for a 5 pack, why not try the TDK's too? Then you can compare and see what you like for the future...
