i got the gf-575 this morning, and at work bored, lots of cleaning stuff i set about giving it a real good clean up, it cleaned up real good and removed a lot of built up grime, i had some wd40 (for ariel) and some chrome cleaner wadding stuff, the ariel came up like new, the chrome on the ends of the handle, speaker trim chrome, came up like new wit it , i removed and cleaned the switches with it and cassete buttons with it and all came up excellent, removed the tuner frequency cover and cleaned that and all in behind, removed cassete decks and cleaned them and inside, and everything was loooking great !!

Then i put some of the stuff on the front to remove some of the abraison and polish it up and thought wow theres a lot of built up grime,, when i gave it a wipe :sadno: :'-( :nonono:     it has taken the metal finish away, so i stopped stright away obviously, it now looks like heavy wear, its not too noticable in normal/low light and where it will be on the shelf is not in sunlight so il be able to live with it although im sick as a pig

is there anything that can be done ??? can that section be replaced with another if anyone had one from a damaged machine ?? (HAS ANYONE GOT A SPARE WHOLE FRONT CASING EVEN ???) can it be restored with anything ? or could maybe a heavy duty sticker be made up with the same brushed metal effect do you think ??? has anyone had this happen before ??? or do i remove the rest of it on that panel so it looks the same or leave it as it is to add charachter of useover the years ?? appriciate any advice on what do to ??

its gone from this

but it still looks like a great unit and im not a serious collector it will be used and enjoyed and did not pay much for it and for the price i paid i would of still willingly paid had it had it already, you can see how its cleaned up and how good the speaker trim and handle chrome has came up with it, although i am very annoyed with mysef i did not test it on a small area, bitter sweet day, i hope i can fix it somehow

Yep. You`ve made a pigs ear of that lad. Stardrops, is the best stuff for this. You are lucky, it didn`t fetch the lettering off.

Sorry to hear that, buddy. :-O Some metal polishes can be very aggressive (ie: Noxon). I have found that you can thin it with vinegar, but on thin brushed aluminum, I like some Windex and elbow grease with a soft cloth.

:agree: With the "lettering" remark.

Edit: You may be able to go over the entire panel with a satin clear coat, but I would check with more experienced members first.

Oh Man....Living and Learning SUX

Well....on your NEXT 575 you'll know not to do that!.....you might be able to balance it out....I don't know :-/

Sorry

Lesson learned... Never use harsh chemicals on boombox at all. Always use soap. My fiancé once used nail polish remover to help me with cleaning knobs without knowing the ill side effects. :-(

i would finish up what you started ,can't hurt anything but will at least look uniform .

plastic polish is the only way to go and works great on chrome parts too. harsh solvents will eat the finish off.

i am gutted, just thankful i hadnt spent £200+ on it, which would of been deverstating beyond belief

i just didnt think and thought the face was metal like the ariel and handles (which came up like new) , it wasnt a case of too much elbow grease it was just the wrong stuff and it ate it straight away with a couple of rubs, i did use a grime remover and plastic cleaner on the rest and it came up a treat, arrrrrrhgggg :-/

is there no way it can be fixed ? what do you think about a sticker method if it can be done right on something thickish ? (ie not a normal type sticker)

or can that section be replaced from a breaker ?

does anyone have a spare part 575 front casing by any miracle ?

i could polish it to look uniform as a last resort, but im going to set it up in a min where it will sit and see how it looks in the light there, it looks like a bit of good old wear tbh, could be worse i suppose like had it taken the lettering off etc

I`m sorry to say. There is not much you can do. Best thing, is, to leave it for a while, to let the sorry feeling wear off. Rubbing it more, may take the lettering off, then, you are in trouble. The gf9797, is the same. It`s only through experience, that i knew, it was silver paint, and, not aluminium.

i know  total schoolboy/inexpirienced type error, if i was at home i woukdnt of even had any of that stuff here

looking on google at "custom brushed aluminium stickers or vinyl" , i think its going to be possible to get someething made, with the technology they have these days and computers, if i can provide some decent hi res images and exact poin point mesurements, i think it will be very likley someone will be able to make some, watch this space , has no one here ever tried to get such a thing made ??

Chrome cleaner on painted or lettered surface spells disaster. Plain old dish soap and water does the trick. I also use a very mild cleaner wax by Meguir's, works like a charm. Sorry you had to learn a hard lesson on this one. No way to fix that unfortunately...

Awwwww... man, that sucks and I know the feeling exactly. It's a stomach-wrenching combination of extreme anger with yourself for pulling such a rookie move, sadness over the state of the machine, and frustration that nobody's yet invented a time machine so you could go back and undo the mistake.

Best you can do is stop kicking yourself and start trying solutions. I've seen some amazing face reproductions on here that were meant to be printed on to metallic paper. I'd look into that. Sorry cant remember which thread but a little digging should turn it up. Good luck!

Don`t mention superglue. I have a like new tpr990, that came with sticker. I was listening to it, while doing something with superglue. My strategy, used to be. Drop a few globules of superglue onto some old card, bend a paper-clip out straight, put the end of the clip into the glue, to get a small ammount. I did this one day, and, picked up too much super glue. I was, carefully, moving it over to where i wanted it, and, a blob fell onto the 990. Talk about heart stopping moment. It was a minute blob, but, it has left a bad mark, on an otherwise mint box. Alway`s use superglue GEL, if you have to.
