Big ben v s 880

How would the big ben compare to say the aiwa 880 in volume,bass, clarity ide realy like to know as im considering buying one. thanks I just don't want to buy a big ben and end up dissapointed as i have done with so many boxes, like i use them for a couple of days then put them away, not many boxes give me that WOW factor like the m90 does,

Like every time i havn't used an m90 when i go to use it it always suprizes me and gives me that WOW factor unlike say my recent buy the sharp 939 (sorry oldschool) it just dosent t amaze me like an m90 same goes for alot of my boxes.

Bottom line i like the looks of a Big ben but don't want to part with ex ammount of $$$$$$$ just for the big ben to end up a display peice cheerz all.

they are similar in size and weight and avg. price -
both have terrific bass outputs --

the sanyo has a real subwoofer as opposed to the 880 radiator-
and the big ben sub has a separate power control -
which is fun.

i like the looks and the sound of the 880 better-
but -- thats very subjective --

look at this big ben sale from tonight-
only US$325 for a nice one--

so --if you decide to buy one --
and then decide that "its no m90"

you could re-sell it --and prolly not lose much-
so -- its worth a shot

thanks for listing this big ben i bought my first m90 from this guy about 5 yrs ago im REALY tempted at this auction

as from what ive heard the big ben is no m90 but it exites me im not worried if she aint as loud but i hope she has that nice warm bass and im sure from what ive read the highs are better than the 880, so i just might go for it

Ramon i need one that works Im not even going to try repairing anymore boxes since my last pioneer 909, i rebelted it used it for about 5 mins then the deck went dead so no more repairing for me unless it's an m90 it's the only box i can fix

There are 3 of the friggin things as i have said before if you were round the corner you could have the bloody things they just upset me as they remind me of my failed attempts at repairing them, the funny thing is my second 909 i have had about 7 i rebelted and it's working fine to this day, but no more pioneer 909's for me

rimmer, i don't have the 880, it is a beauty though and my 660 sounds pretty awesome but I can't think you would be disappointed with a big ben. sound quality i think is better than all my other boxes... i guess the consensus was not better than an m90, but no slacker either. but with you loving m90's so much you might not like it even if it came with a blonde with boobs like five scoops of creamy vanilla ice cream!

Look, (no disrespect Tim), I don't think there is anything short of a home system that will change Tims' mind. The fact of the mattter regading him purchasing one should be clear...

Unless Tim can appreciate the "wholeness" of the Big Ben or 880, not just sound, he will ultimately be unhappy.


Tim, I cannot tell you that you are nuts for your love of the M90. I will tell you this however. I respect your belief in the sound of the M90 being the peak of what sound is from a boombox. But, you will definitely miss some beautiful equipment out there until you open up a bit. There is nothing wrong wih the M90 being your grail. Heck, the Sansui CP-7 is mine, but...I know it is not the end all be all for sound or uniqueness.

Neither is the M90...and the majority wil tell you that. Great box? Yes Greatest? Subjective. Big Ben or 880 worth having? Absolutely. Great sounding at normal listening levels? Absolutely. Unique design and style? Absolutely. Greatest? Subjective.

All that being said...if you get it either, don't look for it to be your M90, modded or stock, look for it to be a Big Ben or 880 and appreciate it for what it is. Period.
