Hi all
Modified my Panasonic RX-DT680 to have input for MP3 or phone, works great. Jimmy's post.

Anyone know steps to changing belts? I changed one gear out in deck one, the gear looked fine, but still get tape bunching up.
i believe the cassette mechanism may be AR 300???
Belts are RDV108ZA & RDV90ZB

Thank you

It the pinch rollers, they are soft and grab the tape. They must be replaced the belts are probably fine.

Hi pinch rollers seem okay, they are not soft, and I cleaned with alcohol.
Try using wet and dry sandpaper then Acetone (Not on the shaft just the rubber) it takes away all the junk and sticky stuff.

Does auto stop work? if so your belts are probably good.

have to disagree on this one hopey, you can not repair pinch rollers it doesn't matter what you do....luckily i think new ones are available on ebay

sometimes you can make new ones but that takes great skill and hours of time, may as well just buy new ones if available

I very rarely ever have to change them even on a 1980 M70, these Pana's do have soft rollers but if you clean them they should work but the sound will flutter.

I believe the website I posted lists what he does. Very respected on tapeheads.net and audiokarma.org.

One other thing to check is the Take up reel torque. If the Pinch roller is slipping then the take up reel can pull the tape off track and cause the tape to wind into the cassette to one side. This can also make the tape jam in the pinch roller.

The take up reel should have a gentle slipping effect (clutch) as the tape speed is controlled by the capstan shaft / pinch roller.

Definitely check the take up reel slippage.
Press play with the door open (no cassette) and try stopping the take up reel with your finger.
If it stops really easy, that's most likely the problem.
If it is, it's probably a dirty tire driving the reel or a slipping clutch.

I think the OP is long gone. I was thinking the take up reel has too much torque pulling it through the pinch roller.

I've had a few that the take up reel drive tire wasn't turning it consistently (usually dirty or dried out/hard rubber tire slipping) and it would lag behind the speed of the pinch roller and the tape would end up getting wound around the pinch roller.
I believe if the take up reel has too much torque, the symptom would be the tape speed being sped up.
I've never worked on one of these "newer" boxes so it might be something completely different than what I'm suggesting.
Yep, I didn't even notice he hasn't posted in over a month.
