ok, next issue..

when i plug my cheapo thomson mp3 player into the aux rca jacks of the Marantz PH32, the volume level & sound is about 1/2 the quality of the fm radio - I need to have the volume up high compared to the radio output.

is this because of my mp3 player :hmmm:

i just found a 20+ yr old tape & even that sounds much better (without the clarity of the mp3)

ive only got a couple of days before i can return this box if its found to be faulty - which would be a shame cause i really like it.

so i guess i need to check the aux circuit is ok.

i dont have a cdplayer here with line out rca plugs otherwise i would plug that in.

what are peoples thoughts?

thanks

if you have another box with line out just run a signal into it from that box and check it that way ,it'll let you know if the problem persist with another input source. also i don't know if that marantz has a gain control for the line in ?.

yeah, all i have here are eggs with no line out :-O

i might be able to borrow an ipod mp3 & try that later

and no i dont think it has a 'gain' adjustment for the aux

plug in the mp 3 player ,put the box on line in .
if you have a tape just press record and turn up the record volume control and see if the music is louder or if the recording has changed volume and is louder than the original input signal from the mp 3 player. this wont change the input volume from the mp3 player only the the recording level but it will make the music louder while recording and it will be louder coming from the speakers .

I would put it down to the thompson  what volume level is the MP3 player set at?

You could use line out from TV, STB or a DVD player.

Are they aux in or Phono in  Sometimes the pre amp setting is different depending on device plugged into each. I believe if it's Phono it's a much lower input :hmmm:

Phono carts output much lower, a phono input has a preamp to boost (and apply ARIA EQ) to the signal.

An AUX source on a phono input will distort due to the high level AUX sources output.

The Marantz has AUX & Phono inputs that are seperate.

I have one around here that I will try and dig up, I use a iriver H340 now so don't need the sony anymore. I thinks it's 2 gig.

It has a sweet 3 min charge for 3 hour playback, at full charge it lasts a while.
