Hi guys, quick question. I bought a Sony CFS-280 recently (see other thread)
Everything seems to work as it should except when I push the autoreverse button,
it seems to be eating the tape !! :-/
I tried another tape and it did the same.

Any idea what the issue is ?
I also cleaned the rollers and capstans as well to see if that would fix it.

thanks

Yes replace belts and if there's a tire that runs take up reels then try and clean tire and riding surface good. Unless tire is too bad then may need to replace. ;-)

There may also be some broken gear. :hmmm:
It would be good if you can post some pic of the mecha.
I already have such problem with the technics auto reverse deck where I found that a little plastic gear is broken. :-/

It is definitely a problem with belts, wheels, gears or springs falling off.

I have several auto reverse decks and in some cases it needed lubrication also to fix it. On one of my Akai high end decks, the problem was a pinch roller wheel assembly stuck at the axle. The lubrication dried up to a brown mess and the whole assembly won't move to make contact with the capstan. I had to remove the c-clip, use solvent and soak overnight and then pull the assembly out, clean the dried up lubrication, re lube and put it back to make it work.

Very closely watch the transport mechanism on the direction that is working well and see what’s missing in the other direction that has issues. Once you learn how the mechanism engage and disengage you will easily detect the fault.
