Are prices getting cheaper?

I noticed that mid sized low to medium end boxes have been going for some amazingly low bids on eBay.
Is this due to summer or is there something bigger going on?
I can give examples but just wanted to know of others have noticed as well.

You know, not being in this game as long as others it's hard for me to see the long term trends....BUT it does seem like there has been a leveling off on the quality mid sized boxes. The C100F's and the J1's are still holding solid at the top, but it does seem like there are some GREAT deals to be had on good radios!

Screw trends, I like it!

In comparison to about 2 or 3 years ago there sure seems to be a price decline in the moderate boxes and even a bit in the high end, I would assume it's at least in part to the changes in the economy.

That's an excellent point Ed, so prices are still far from adjusting back to pre-insanity levels.

Interesting. What was an average mid size box going for 6-7 years ago? How about the high end, M90 or sanyo 9998? :-)

for the boxes i have bid on this past 1/2 year --the prices have not gone down at all .

Ira if you would stop bidding on Harley boxes and little pink boxes that never sold for more than $10 your perspective might be different.

Seriously the true in demand boxes are still in demand and sell high but it seems a lot of the middle or lower end boxes just don't spark as much interest as they did 2 years ago.

Those are two of the exceptions since they are rare, fairly high end or great performing boxes. These aren't really comparable to Panasonic 5150's or Sanyo 7900's which seem to have generally dropped in price the last year or two.

I can't say for all boxes but heres a few I recall:
Extra clean working GF-9292 I paid $127
Mint working RX-5250 $150
Mint CFS-D7 in Box, as new $40
Marantz No Working Deck CRS-4000 $125ish
Telefunken Studio M1, deck bad, $60ish
Toshiba RT-S391 (like Gluecifers) no remote $60ish
AIWA TPR-950 $48ish
VZ2000, needed belt, otherwise excellent $160 or so.
Mini Sansui FX-500R mint working $55ish
I paid around $150 - $175 for a Sanyo 9998, but that was later maybe 2006, sold to IRA for $175??? (Ira may remember)
All these still had shipping, but that was less than today.

Most medium size better boxes were $100 - $200

I cant recall on the big boxes, as I did'nt get into the big ones and they were rather not common on eBay yet like today.
Panasonicfanfarthead over at S2G once stunned us all by bidding $1500 for a RX-5350, as any oldtimer here might recall.
I hav all my prices, I will look up others, these are just top o me head................

Great prices Ed and if they were still at that level I'd buy them all.
Do you have most of those or did you already get rid of them?

thanks for the old price list , ed .......
and more thanks for the good deal on the 9998 --which quickly became an
all-time fav :-)

At one time I had over 100 boxes, to put it into perspective about 1/10 of Ira's collection.
Most are gone....
Still have the TPR-950, CFS-D7(it was the recording box on the traveling tape event), FX-500R and GF-9292 (currently boarding at JT's)

I have also way overpaid for stuff, (like a few of Peppin's) .........
Also like everbody else I have gotten crap not as advertised, broken ****, etc. etc., but it was alot more fun when ebay was less sophisticated.

Best wild box was a JVC PC-5 fully working for $20 a a thrift store.
Best freebie...Sony CFS-43 from the Beach Beast of Boynton

Wow Ed that's a serious Boombox collection contraction. Was it the $1000 Peppin box that broke your buying habit?

I think you might be right Ira is roughly around 1000 boxes and counting. :hmmm:

Great info thanks Uncle Ed!!. 100 boxes, wow.

I won't comment on ira's collection because I cant even comprend what 1000 boxes would look like.

Yes, peppins radios to seem to bring in top dollar. But, somehow, he manages to find and sell rare models which are often the only ones in the known universe for sale . :-)
Lately his prices are a bit down though, his GF9696 is only 225, not too bad if you don't mind your tapes being eaten.

Radios prices remind me of classic cars. The prices trail the peak earning years of the generation. This means we still have a good road ahead, based on the 'youngest and oldest' post,. Most of us will still be buying strong 10-20 years from now.

darn  break over..back to work.

One box I have seen go up quite a bit is the ever popular Magnavox d8443. :-) I have seen dozens over the past couple months selling way over $100 on ebay :hmmm: and not mint ;-)
