Anyone heard of Susumu brand boombox?
This is a question I first asked on Stereo2go 3 years ago!

It was cheap, it was crap! but it was my first portable stereo in the late 80s. It had a dual casstte deck and high speed dubbing for recording and at around £30 that was all that mattered when I was 13!! anyway, can anyone else remember this budget brand? did I mispell it? or is my memory playing tricks?

Can't remember much except it was about 1988, colour was black, it was long but not tall like a lot of late 80s boxes, as for build quaulity it was light but not flimsy but it had soft eject that was useless from day 1 (deck 2 would take about 5 minutes to open without a bit of help).

anyway fast forward 3 years.................................

Today I found someone else that had heard of Susumu brand Boomboxes. A new guy at work was sat next to me and we were talking about interests and hobbies and I told him about collecting boomboxes! He is about the same age as me and said he still owned the box he had from when he was 13! I asked what model it was (in case it was a grail ;-) )and imagine my surprise when he said Susumu! he was also surprised that I had heard of this brand and agreed to send me some pics.
It's not the same one as I had (think mine was an older model similar in shape but no digital display) but finding anything about this brand is rare, try searching for Susumu boomboxes on google and you find bugger all (apart from my posts) :bang:
here is the only one I've seen in about 25 years!

I too have not heard of them.Thought maybe you were talking about Sampo or Sansui.Man I think Susumu almost sounds made up,but there it is.So I guess I missed it.Did you buy this one in your pics? Its kinda cool, what with the 3 band eq and dual cassette.Almost looks like a lot of the latter Sonys.

Hi, ralrein1!
No I didn't buy the box in the pictures, the guy hinted that he would let it go for big bucks while I (politely as possible)let him know I wouldn't have it for free!

I don't have much nostalgia for my first box, my mate had a big silver Aiwa (a 990 I think)that was about 5 years old that he had gotten from his older brother that was about 5 years old and even back then we both agreed that his was better in every way! The only good thing about mine was the dual cassette deck for all our copying of music and computer games

Hey Smeats, Looks like you've got the same problem as me....My first radio was a mono cassette made by BicSound. Never been able to find anything related to it. I still keep my eyes open, but have little hope of finding one.

At least you found someone to verify your not crazy!

Haha yeah I was having doubts over my memory /sanity :)

If you did find your first box, would you buy it? Or are you like me and don't really miss it? Haha

OK, wait  ....I wouldn't pay $1K for it, but if it was $20-$30 (hey, it's a tiny mono box) then yes, all the way!

I've been thinking and I now agree. If I found the exact model going cheap then I would buy it for old times sake;)
I thought I had no nostalgia for that box but I remembered the fun me and my little brother had using the built in mic to make tapes pretending to be radio DJs haha. I used to hide my cigarettes in the battery compartment as a teen and my mates first car had no radio so we had to listen to my little boomer :). I still feel guilty about the way we said goodbye to my Susumu cos when it started to chew our favourite tapes a friend asked if he could launch it out the car window at 70 mph, I said yes ok (seemed oh so funny at the time) it would have been about 5 years old at the time R.I.Pieces hahaha:)

Si, your GF4646 was 100 times more quality than my Susumu, believe me! even at 12 or 13 I liked the big silver boxes more! what a difference 5 to 10 years made the price (and quality) was a fraction of what it was

Oh man, brutal ending to that story. I don;t know what happened to my BicSound. It probably just went in the trash bin when I moved up to my Lasonic 920, but like you, I recorded with the built in mic, recorded off the radio, cranked that little speaker past 11 and rocked hard air guitar in front of the mirror.

Yep, if I stumbled on one, it would end up in the collection for sure
