any polishes or other products out there that can bring out the original shine and luster on brushed aluminum surfaces without rubbing off the lettering.

I wouldn't use anything stronger than light soap water. Paint and coatings back in the 80s were of inferior quality compared to what we have nowadays. Technically the Al with the lettering should have a protective coating on it. This will or will not exist depending on the manufacturer of the box. There are incidents where even soap water attacking the lettering and removing it. Now we are light years ahead in chemical and environment resistant coatings. I would think twice before I try cleaning oxidized Al surfaces with lettering. For any cleaning with chemicals be prepared for a give and take.

Yes, give and take as in; use Autosol and stock up on Letrasets so that you can remake the decals once the surface has been cleaned.

Use the thin lines that separate the rows on the Letrasets to create the lines shewn between various of the control legends:

(Where the letters are the bare aluminium, just mask up and paint the rectangular outline over some black or white characters from the 'set then, once the paint has cured, scrape back the paint from over the letters which is easy as it won't take to their surface. Then scrape the letters away and you're left with their shapes in bare metal with black surround, almost indistinguishable from the original unless you're close by the box and armed with measuring equipment).

tried soapy water but didnt do anything. so i took a small dab of mothers car polish and it removed all the cloudiness on the metal without hurting the lettering :-D
