Waiting on another JVC RC-828, Panasonic RX-4940 and a Magnavox D8443 to arrive. Getting into the box collecting, starting with those I've had in the past.

Got my D8443 today! Good cosmetic condition. Mostly works, It has rubber band belts, will get proper new belts asap. Unfortunately, the capstan drive gear is missing teeth. :hmmm: I will have to remedy this in order to get the deck functioning again. Will get some pics up.

Just tracked my RX-4940 and it was delivered to an address in AZ and I'm in PA!!

Got the RC-828 today! Good condition, sounds good but needs belts and a volume slide switch. Panasonic is supposed to be on the way but tracking says delivered to AZ! Waiting, waiting.

The Panasonic showed up in the mail yesterday. No sign of a stop off in AZ, as the tracking stated. Tracking numbers match but USPS shows it was delivered in AZ. The postal guy said they must've made a duplicate tracking number? Uh, how is that possible? He acted like it happens all the time? Anyway, it showed up in good condition and I'm much happier about it now! Will pic tomorrow.

Excellent!
How did you repair the tape gear? I've got two of these with that part screwed on both.

Rock On.

I'm workin on maybe getting a replacement made by an online manufacturer or possibly doin a mold of mine, whats left of it, and pourin my own gear with some liquid plastic. Been researching, but haven't commited to any one direction. Did try to make a mold of my gear, worked kinda, will have to try again with more patience. slight imperfections in the mold due to excess movement during the curing process. If I can make or get a solid replacement I will surely let everyone know when/if a replacement is available.

I've done minor cleaning and belt changes to both RC-828s and the Panasonic. The D8443 needs the belts changed and the typical tape drive gear, workin on a solution. RC-828 #2 needs a volume slide pot, workin on a replacement or repair solution. All in all, these do work well, other than the listed problems and I happy about that.

I have my eye out for a TRC-920, 935, RC-838, GF-9696 and more.

Racked my brain for a way to repair the wiper track on the slide volume pot. Tried some unsuccessful attempts, then it dawns on me, use a pencil! Had a handy wood marking pencil that I rubbed on the track that had a wear spot and a break. Vwalla, the volume control works now! I expect only temporary, but I'll take it until I find a usuable slide pot!

D8443 has decent mid/low bass, a little muddy. I added some filter caps to both mids and that helped to remove the lower bass from the mids and cleaned up the sound at higher volumes. Turning the Bass control knob fully at lower volume is ok but at mid to higher volume the loss of highs is too great. Volume knob goes to 20. Treble and Bass control knobs go -10 to +10. At +3 on Bass and +10 on Treble I can turn volume up to 14 and its pretty loud with decent bass, no real floor shaker, like it looks with the center woofer, but decent bass. This unit is only rated at 2W per channel and 3.2W for center woofer, per Service Manual, so the bass is limited by the amp and the conservative center woofer. I like the looks and it is not that bad sounding, either.
