Craigslist has come through for me again, this time it was a Pioneer SK-31 in Mint fully operational condition with only one flaw that I can find. The plastic clip that holds the end of the antenna is partailly broken in one tiny place but all pieces are intact so I can repair it. The feet on this box don't show any wear like this box sat on a shelf or in a closet it's whole life. One of the few last real childhood boxes on my list was a Pioneer SK-21, the SK-31 is the same box with a few extra features otherwise it's reall the same. So for me that SK-21 quest is over however if one falls in my lap I won't walk away from it. :nonono:

Congratulations Don!! That's a beautiful specimen of a very classy radio.
I'm assuming it has that lovely warm and detailled Pioneer sound too

Thanks guys it was a shock to see it in a CL add this morning. I didn't check yesterday afternoon but this morning before I left the house I did my usual quick search and couldn't believe what I saw, emailed the seller my number and within 3 hours we hooked up and she is mine. The guy said he bought it from an estate sale for his son who wanted a boombox but when he presented it his son said that's not a boombox, he wanted something much bigger. Well his sons loss is my gain thank goodness because most kids probably would have ruined the minty beauty of this box.

Rick yes it does sound warm, these aren't real loud boxes but they do sound pretty nice and they look great too.

Oldy you don't owe me, a lot of brothers took part in taking care of your personal grail for you.
I'm thrilled your getting that minty CP-7 and just as thrilled that so many members took part, even some that have never met you which speaks volumes for the integrity and character of the members here.

Like they say "giving is it's own reward" and I believe that's true.

Friend,

Can you tell me about the external speaker jacks on your Pioneer SK-31? I've got one of these units coming my way in a couple of weeks, and have three questions.

1. On which side of the SK-31 are the external speaker jacks located?
2. The external speaker jacks are obviously output, not input jacks, but
when the external speakers are plugged in, do the speakers that are
built into the SK-31 automatically turn off?
3. What kind of speakers do I need to have to use the external speaker
jacks? Do they need to be powered? And if they're not powered,
then how can I get regular speaker wire (two copper wires) to work in
the external speaker jacks? Are they RCA jacks, or 1/8" mini jacks, or what?

Thanks for letting me know what you know so I can get the supplies I need on hand before it arrives. The speakers I have are not powered. And I hope they will work, as they're very good book-shelf speakers. I've also paid for someone to send me a User's Manual for this unit, and I bought a Service Manual (accidentally thinking that it was an Owner's Manual). As you're able to help me, I'd be more than happy to photocopy both of these when I have them in hand, and send them to you free of charge. Godspeed.

welcome to this welcome site :-)
-------------------------------------------------------

with all ext jacks i have ever seen --
your speakers dont have to self powered --
the main box speakers will shut off --when the 1/8 plugs are inserted

and radio shack sells the 1/8 pins --but --its a PITA to wire them --

maybe, now --they do sell 1/8 or RCA jacks that are pre-wired ??

hope someone here will know that ???

Welcome gregglamm, stick around and have a good time sharing boombox and 80's passions.

redbenjoe is correct on all counts.
The Jack Board is on the left side when facing the box. External speakers need to be 4 ohm minimum and the amps in these are rated at 2 watts per channel.

Friends,

Thanks for the quick replies. And the screen shot is helpful too. Thanks so much. I'll look into Radio Shack and about the PITA speaker wires with 1/8 pins already wired! Thanks and Godspeed.

Friends,

Is this Radio Shack option below the kind of speaker connector you're referring to? I'm picturing that I could strip the little flat-forked connector ends off, uncover the wire covering a bit, connect those bare speaker wire ends into the back of the speakers, and then connect the two 1/8" plugs into the External Speaker Jacks on the side of the Pioneer SK-31. Thanks for letting me know if this is the simple fix you've suggested.
